It's crazy to think you would be better buying one that didn't have a BMW service history. When I complained to the BMW dealer they said sure bring it down and we will dismantle the engine and see what damage is done, for £145 per hour + VAT! **** right off.

It wouldn't put me off buying another 3.0d, though maybe not the bi turbo. The worst most people experience is turbo failure, I guess I was just unlucky.

Evo's, scoobs n skylines etc teach you to look after your turbo, i don't think the common joe would be aware of maintaining it, i treat the 330d just the same way as the evo warming up and cooling down everytime. First 5-10mins and the last 5-10mins is just plain cruising.
The more cars are built, the less i like them. Bland, lacking character, not basic enough, too many sensors and ecu parameters to stay within. One stupid wee sensor can render a whole car useless and if you've no equipment to check your screwed over at the garage.
Bollox to it, give me a mk1 escort.

Being a vag head, do you not find the interior of the X really dated, bland and boring in comparison

Nope, I've always had a soft spot for it and the E39/38 etc.

Mrs Lyons suggested an RX400h last night, but my heart really wants an X5!

Was does your wallet want? I'm guessing some reliable jap scrap. What mpg does the diesel x5 do?

Probably around 25? Not too bothered about economy, it'll be a second car anyway.

To be honest I'm not overly concerned about the cost of fixing an X5. There hasn't been anything really severe I've heard of that would put me off one.

A well spec'd X5 hasn't really aged too badly IMO. The Lexus is wild looking, so is a lot of the other stuff of that era tbh.

Passed a X5 this morning and thought it still looked good

But then why get a diesel if mpg or any sort of performance isn't a concern, would a 3.0i not be a better buy, sound far better and would Probably be a fair bit cheaper and get less miles for you money.

yes they are, the wife has one and agrees, inside they are nice places to be and performance and economy of something that size is impressive.

Wouldnt mind a L322 myself. For me it would be between it and the X5. I guess they might share a few parts being part of the same group at the same time?

Biggest offput for both is the auto boxes. Tbh any fuel saving would be wiped by the box going and it seems to be fairly common on nearly all of the auto versions. For that reason alone I'd probably opt for the manual X5 3.0i, but that won't really work for the Mrs.

Yeh I saw a Le Mans edition in the local garage a few weeks ago and it looked flipping awesome- it's what has really planted this seed!

Yea, auto boxes are a weak link so buy from a dealer with a warranty of some sort or buy one with a receipt for 2.5k like I did :grinning:

Yeah that's the way to do it. Fresh box with warranty on it for peace of mind.

I'd take that!

I'd be expecting to see at least 30mpg from 1 too, considering a healthy 530D auto will return high 30's with mixed driving.

I'm sure @Alan_B sees upwards of 30mpg in his TD6 too.

Would you not consider a TD6 Range Rover? Same engine, same demons but i think they're a much nicer vehicle to be in, and a better looking vehicle too IMO.
