So the manufacturers warranty is coming to an end on my 2020 m340i xdrive and I have been looking into taking the BMW comprehensive extended warranty. Its going to come in at about £600 a year. Just wondered if any of you guys have or have had this and if you found it to be good value for money..? Thanks

I have had it on all my BMW's and its paid for itself over and over. Would 10/10 recommend it.

Anything of that value, and from the German manufacturers the extended warranty is a no brainier.

These days £600 probably equates to a few hours labour. I extended the warranty on my last BMW, and the first claim was way more than I had paid to extend the warranty.

I’ve had the opposite experience from above. e92 m3 bought from bmw as approved used With an additional two years extended warranty. gearbox fault comes on one day. Took to dealer at next available time, which was 4 weeks. Had to authorise two hours labour for them to diagnose the fault, which I would have to pay if the Part wasn’t covered by warranty, or no fault was found. After two hours they said, no faults on the computer, and to just continue to drive the car. If it stopped, use the recovery service. After some more discussion, they did admit the mechanic noted that the clutch(dct) was dragging and their was an oil leak. I asked can this not be fixed? They said they would need another 4 hours labour authorised to take the gearbox of and examine. Again if the fault was not covered by the warranty, I would have to pay the now 6 hours labour plus any further repair costs. The car had only travelled 3000 miles since I purchased it.
Had no confidence in them, and didn’t want to be out 6 hours labour and a gearbox on the floor.
Had heated words, paid the £240 for the two hours labour and lifted the car.
I lost faith in the car and traded it in to them shortly after.

just in case you are not aware, the bmw extended warranty is an insurance product from allianz, and not actually run by bmw. Hence why they have to diagnose the fault, then determine if the insurance company will pay. The dealers will know what is and what isn’t covered for common faults, but when it’s a “new” fault, you may be liable for all the labour if the faulty part isn’t covered by the warranty.

The Approved Used warranty is up on the X5 in January and the renewal came through today- £1617 for the full comprehensive cover with a, named component is £1325 and driveline warranty is £982. Those are all with £100 excess and no roadside assistance included. I'm struggling to know what to do to be honest. The £1617 is just too much to justify I think, you'd be safer just saving the £ and putting it towards anything major at a specialist, should it occur. The cover provided by the named component seems sufficient (seems to be really anything expensive), its just the likes of the iDrive, modules etc that aren't covered. But then at the same time its only £300 less than the full warranty?!

Not sure if the driveline warranty is even worth considering, bar the fact that it does cover engine, turbo, haldex, gearbox etc. However the total claim value on the driveline warranty is only £5k, which wouldn't go very far in BMW when the box on my Allroad cost £14k!

Increasing the excess on the comprehensive and named component to £250 reduces the quotes to £1185 and £979 respectively.

Opinions welcome!

@Lyons what about a 3rd part warranty as a half way house?

Personally as with all insurance products I'd rather stick that £1600 in an account and take the risk, as no guarantee the insurers will pay out.

There was an RAC one that came with the X3 that seemed good- paid out for a transfer case with no issue. But as a rule I’d be more wary about a 3rd party one like that.
