The 2016 Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship made its first steps towards the opening of the season last night with the official launch of the 2016 Corrib Oil Galway International Rally.

A change in rules caused much controversy last year but the rule change and subsequent cost reduction of competing at the top end, coupled with the economic upturn of the last few years seems to have ignited a renewed interest in the Championship (@Cess may have been right after all :p). All in all, Circa 10 R5/S2000 spec cars have entered the season opener so far with a total of 15 cars predicted to take to line at Ballybrit racecourse. Entries so far include the 2 Moffett brothers, Keith Cronin in a DS3, Aaron McHale in a Skoda and Welsh visitor Thomas Davies will have his first outing in his new R5 fiesta.

Also on the entry list are 5 WRC's ....... including last years ITC Declan Boyle in the fiesta WRC, Roy White also in a Fiesta WRC, Tim McNulty in a Mini WRC, Garry Jennings in his rebuilt S12 Impreza WRC and Declan 'the milkman' Gallagher has secured a one off appearance in an S8 Impreza WRC, which Garry Jennings has recently purchased from DMG.

German visitor Dieter Kölle will also be making a return to Galway in the Porsche to add a unique sound to the event.

It is shaping up to be a great rally and one of the best supported title races in a long time ..... Anyone got any plans to make the trip?

The moffetts have stayed loyal to Ford, going with 2 R5 spec fiestas, tackling both the ITC and BRC

Tim mcNulty is tackling the season opener in a WRC mini

The milkman has a seat in this S8 impreza for the first round of the ITC, an ex DMG car recently purchased by Garry Jennings.

Not sure what other cars Gallagher has driven in the past. I think it will have to run in Class 15, so he'll be competing in the modified category. I reckon Gallagher must think he's in with a chance of winning that section with the Impreza and getting a high finish, just like he would if he were in the Starlet.

Shame the R5 cars are not allowed to compete in the Donegal Mini Stages this weekend.

k

That's motorsport Ireland for you!! When some people want to move on and use modern machinery there's always something thrown in the way. It's OK tho if you have an escort, this island is stuck in "dinosaur mode" with them and don't want to progress!!

As long as the cage ain't damaged it'll not be too bad to fix. They can look worse than they really are at times. But the car served its purpose in protecting the crew.
Oh I know, I've worked on a few rolls and smashes, still a lot of work even if the cage hasn't a bent bar or two.

Basically a new shell from the A post back, minus the B posts and floor :p
