First go ever doing something like this.

Basically up to letting the paint cure before lacquering .

Not perfect but better than the orginal state .

I bought a few cans of cheap primer from pound world. Wouldn't waste my money on it again. Spend an extra few quid and get something half decent.

What did you find wrong with it? I found the coverage to be great when I done my wheels.

Looks decent, give the LAcquer more than 24 hours to dry, unlike what i did and ****ed up three of my 4.

really well!
What did you guys do with your top coat? I'm putting my topcoat of graphite on tonight. But the 2 sheds I have to do it in are baltic. One is too big to heat although there is no drafts. The other is a small single car garage but the doors have about a 2/3inch gap at the bottom and the draft comes straight in. I now have the drafts blocked but its still a cold garage. If I don't have any heat will it not dry like a frosty effect?

I know people do it, but I really wouldn't recommend painting them in your house.

The amount of paint thinners that's in the are so cans is unreal, and by the time 4 wheels are done your house will stick, and breathing in that stuff is not good for you at all.

@big-lew18 have you anyway of heating the small garage for a while, it doesn't need to be hot or even warm, tho that will help the paint dry quicker.

It just needs to be able to keep it above frost levels of cold (5ish degrees) , it's when it's that cold the problems will arise, basically the paint/lacquer can turn white/cloudy

I have a set of polished alloys that id like to spray.
What prep do I need to get them ready for painting.
Rough up the polished surface and spray with an etch primer to leave it ready for paint?

Or should I be doing it another way?

how good a job do you want? I think you can just lash on over the etch primer but from memory its a bit thinner than regular primer so might be harder to get nice and flat.

Didn't use any primer on my old wheels. Few coats of satin black over the scored alloys. Seen the car recently and still holding up (y)

They are a decent set of wheels so as good a job as possible for a diyer.
Il throw a coat of normal primer or filler primer on after the etch for a better finish.

Having the wife's Fiat 500 wheels done sort of on the cheap.

Got them soda blasted by Maine surface refinishing in Ballymoney and getting a local painter to prime and paint.

Having them done in BMW ferric grey.

Was £10 per wheel for the soda blasting.
Paint, primer and lacquer circa £50.
Painter is charging £50.
So, £140 in total.

Will post the results!
