Hi,

As all the summer car sports are coming to an end there is a motorsport to keep people occupied during the winter months. Sporting Trials, or 'Mudplugging', is run from October to March every two weeks in different locations across NI and there are several clubs and championship in England. These are purpose built cars following rules governed by the MSA, and these have remained virtually unchanged from the early 70s. Costs are low, tyres are cheap, and the cars don't require a lot of maintenance, it is a fun sport that gets you outside during the winter months. For more details ask me, there is a club website www.sportingtrialscarclub.co.uk and the calendar is posted there.

I've seen these yokes in action before. Great fun but bloody messy!

Any production car trials over here? It seems to be popular on the mainland.

Some motor clubs run a production car trial occasionally as a special event, but I don't think there is a club here (might be wrong though).

It can be messy,

Seen a few of these yokes up close and personal when I worked in Tommy Reid's place in the late 80's. Seriously specialized with the fiddle brakes and gas coversions. Those early concord ones had anglia axles from memory..

Concords are still very competative, they seem to have either the BMC or Anglia/Escort axle, my last car had an Anglia in it. Tommy was trialling up until 4/5 years ago, remarkable man.

Some boy, he had a clatter of stuff around him back then although I believe a lot of it has been sold off in the last few years. The race workshop made from corrugated iron that wouldn't have looked out of place in Bogota with an ex cosworth engine dyno was a highlight amongst other things. Serious character, knew his stuff inside out, good to see he's still kicking around.

If anyone is interested in taking a look at Sporting Trials we are out this Saturday, the 29th Oct, at James Wightman's in Spa Ballynahinch,162 Dunmore Road (site is also used by the trials bike clubs). It would be a good one to go to, good parking, the weather doesn't look too bad and it is a compact site. We start at 1030, should finish about 1530, we do take a break at about 12ish to make changes to the sections.

I had a run as a passenger in one. Best fun I've ever had in a car. Straight up a hill you could hardly walk up, then across a slope that would tip a Land Rover over and finally launch off over some tree roots and straight down the hill again. To say my stomach was in my mouth a few times, especially going downhill is an understatement. Better than Funderland any day.

Peter, if you ever want to give it a go again there are usually drivers looking out for passengers.

If you are interested in spectating, passenger, driving or marshalling check the website, or email sportingtrialscarclubni@gmail.com.
