12The sun gods where definitely looking down on us for the third of five trax-days being held by Club GTI at Kirkistown this year.

Although we got the best weather in 2 years at the track, we had expected it to be quieter than usual due to the number of other events being held around the province the same day. This aside, we still had a great turnout of cars on the track.

Those included, of course a wide and varied range of Vee-Dubs ( Many Mk1 & Mk2 GTI’s plus a Mk4 TDI and Bora ), a Clio V6, Pug 205 Rally Car, TVR, Mercedes CLK 320 and a rare but immaculate Mk1 XR2 Fiesta.

The brilliant weather conditions promised some excellent action, and everyone was pushing it to the limit from the first green flag of the day. The thrills and spills were not long unfolding as the V6 Clio, exiting a tight right hander under heavy acceleration, broke rear end traction, sending it spinning off the track and into the tyres…… We all held our breath as it returned to the pits…. Thankfully, the damaged was limited to scuffed paintwork on the front bumper, and a cracked rear arch and lower valance.

Through the day, there where various other spinners… Simon in the Mk1 Golf and Mark in the MK1 XR2 both ended up facing the wrong way on the track, whilst Kieron in the Mercedes nicely spun a 360 to carry on in the same direction he started (nice work young man). The guys from Club GTI Southern Region again turned up in force with a Pug 205 Rally Car and a lovely Mk4 TDI on 18” BBS, which sadly popped a driveshaft and had to be trailered, back home to Dublin.

An appearance from the Red-Bull girls in the afternoon brought a smile to many faces (you can say that again – KA klub), and they handed out free tins of wings to keep us all cool in the roasting sunshine…… in return, the two Simons took them for a few laps on the track.

Yet another great day had, and we all left sunburnt, but happy!
