Kenny McKinstry won the New Year Stages Rally, organised by the 500 MRCI, at Kirkistown race circuit. Driving a Subaru World Rally Car the Banbridge driver pulled out all the stops on the sixth and final stage to snatch victory.

Alan Carmichael and George Robinson in their Subarus were on identical times at the end of the day, so a count back based on the fastest time on the opening stage saw the verdict go to Carmichael for the runner up position.

John McGaffin brought his Kenny McKinstry Motorsport prepared Subaru into fourth place while Dominic McNeill (Ford Escort WRC) and Gary White (Subaru Impreza) completed the top six.

Sixty one cars made the start and there were only five retirements; the most notable being number one seed Derek McGarrity who was forced out on special stage four as a result of a broken driveshaft on his Mitsubishi EVO.
