After having our appetites whetted by some racing action at Bishopscourt and the anticipation of some real action at DragWarz we decided to head to Ten Of the Best in York. Its the shootout for the title of fastest roadlegal car in the UK with teams from all the big car clubs entering.
So myself, Jeff (pocket_rocket), and Phil (Phil_D) hit easyjet for some flights over, and bagged a snazzy Bora hirecar for the trip to York. 1600cc of VWs finest was truely uninspiring but hey it did the job.
The journey down was pretty uneventful but we pulled off the main road towards the airfield we suddenly found ourselves in a row of skylines, scoobies and pulsars. Damn this is gonna be good and these are just the spectators!!!!!
Pulling into the carpark was a feast of modified cars. Barely a fibreglass corsa in sight we are talking lancers, tvrs, imprezas, supras, lotus, fiat coupes, everything under the sun. So we parked up and headed off towards the track to see some action. The cars waiting in line were amazing, there was all sorts running. Turbo crxs had fun with dodge vipers, NSXs got nailed by MR2s, Andy Nicholls maestro turbo harried supras, the twin engine golf harried everything. The craic was mighty!
As the day went on the true contenders became apparant. The skylines were dominating 4wd class, the supras in the rwd and the rovers were taking no prisoners in the fwd along with the mighty fast turbo crxs. This was an event where size DIDNT matter. Big engined corvettes and dodge vipers looked slow in the company of highly tuned evos and hyabusa engined kitcars.
As well as the 1/4 mile racing there was also two other events, the high speed run (over 1.25 miles) and the handling course. The evos walked the handling course with the 1000bhp supra taking the top speed of 201mph.
As the heat grew so did the anticipation of the final shootouts. These would decide who really was top of the top. The highlight had to be seeing a 1000bhp supra getting its ass handed to it by the skyline in the first place shootout. Truely amazing!!!
So will be back next year? Hell yeah – if the Bora can take it 😉
