This year marked the 30th anniversary for the Kilbroney Vintage Show and early indications were that this was going to be a big one. Started in 1985, the Kilbroney show was initially organised to mark the centenary of the motor car and has since ran from strength to strength getting bigger and better each year.

The only rule for entry to the Kilbroney Vintage show is that all cars are registered prior to 31st December 1990 and all tractors registered prior to 31st December 1980. This open policy creates one of the most varied vintage shows in Ireland, attracting a huge array of commercial, military and farming machinery. Even some modern stuff gets in too with the MK1 MX-5 (a sure future classic and personal favourite of mine) being represented in significant numbers already, thanks to the MX-5 club.

The day initially started off like most Irish summer days – overcast, grey and raining and as we traveled (slowly) from Belfast to Rostrevor in our little Austin miniMetro we were wondering if the show will be a complete wash out. Thankfully not. The rain soon cleared, the sun appeared, BBQ’s were lit and by midday the venue was rammed!

Prizes were awarded for Car of the Show, Tractor, Motor Cycle, Scooter, Stationery Vehicle, Small commercial vehicle, Large commercial vehicle, Trike, Club Stand, Most unusual item, Oldest Vehicle and Furthest traveled. No mean feat for the judges!

In our little group we struggled to single out one car we liked.  One of us, having a particular penchant for the RWD, was drawn towards the collection of Corolla AE86’s, E30 BMW’s and Sierra Cosworths, whereas others were attracted to the T2 VW Campers, a certain little Fiat Amigo and seemed to develop a new found love for the Triumph TR6.  For me I must admit I just can’t keep away from the MX-5’s.

A huge thank you to the organisers and all those that took part.
