Are you not busting to put the windscreen in 🤣 would be such a thing to add the finished look to it for all the 20mins it takes to fit lol

Properly awesome wee car, build of dreams

And leaving it out can make working in and around easier. If there's still stuff inside to do..I'd be leaving doors and windows off

It would be nice ha ha, another job ive been putting off. Im going to put a heated screen in this from Evans Motorsport, Just haven't decided if im going to go Monte Carlo spec with the visible elements or completely clear,. It will probably be one of the last jobs before is ready to map. Doors are only on so they don't get damaged in the garage.

I'd go clear...it would surely be annoying not clear ?

Thats been a thought, id imagine it will most likely be clear. The Mote screen was just something I saw and thought that might fit in with the car, but I couldn't pull the trigger and order it.

I don't think it would be that annoying lad. You'd certainly get used to it. Either screen would be a good choice imo, and the style of the monte one would be cool!

Few photos now arches are all fitted and ride has settled a bit, going to lift it a bit on the ad drop it at rear. Im pretty chuffed with with it in honesty.

Also bit the bullet and sold my willwood pedal box, reality was it was stopping me from getting any fuel or brake lines through into the bay. Thought if i moved it to the floor id have more room on the bulkhead, It does but I dont know how I feel about the driving position, my gut says the whole thing needs cut and dropped into the floor maybe 40mm and maybe the pedals modified a bit. At least it looks good for now anyway... Might be time to get the grinder out again :worried:

Another month has come and past and now we are into June. Had the misfortune of being on the furlough scheme for a few weeks which Il be honest i wasn't overly pleased with, its the longest ive ever been away from work since I was 15, last few years ive only ever taken long weekends throughout the year of max 5 days and the compulsory week at Christmas which kills me.

To keep myself occupied i designed a few bits for the mini, first up was a heel plate for the pedal box

96047612_269091611158892_5753555657353592832_n.jpg

It was designed so that it bolted in to help add rigidity to the floor as well as have a removable cover that could be removed to allow adjustment into the push rod of the master cylinders or access to them. Was made out of some aluminum, laser cut and then pressed. To add a small flare to it I cut a PBE Logo and polished it to contrast. From here plan was to then make a second plate that would sit in around it and cover the rest of the floor, idea was you could protect the paint and remove it to be painted annually for a freshen up. But that plan changed.... more on that later.

Next up a rear parcel shelf, people often fit a carbon cover but to me carbon isn't right for this build and a random piece wouldn't fit in. To me you have to tie small themes together from front to back to truly finish a build off. What I came up with was yet again something cost effective and simple.

97613089_582565355705287_159881179795816448_n.jpg

Im a big fan of satin black details around the engine bay these have spilled out into the form of the small wing mirrors, wheel arches, soon to be door cards and the rear plate plinth. The small light came from a fella called jb fab, its positioned to bolt through existing holes in the shelf. Small bracket ties in with the brookfab spark plug cover and the mirror plinths. the light will be used as a high level brake light and double as a fog lamp for mot by swapping the spade over on the loom.

Next up is probably something ive been more excited about than I should be, Ive always wanted a set of these and with things happening in the world I needed something to look forward to. Mays pay hit the account, back to the full fat amount, bills where paid, healthy amount into the savings and i was left with the months diesel money and what i usually spend on the likes of date nights with the mrs , basically the man math added up and i thought feck it.........

about a week and a half later these turned up

kad2.jpg

Made by probably a company i consider to be top of the mini parts tree in terms of quality and function, they are however twice the price of the other stuff. Few times i was close to going metro 4 pots but they dont have the Gucci appeal........... And these are billet. Also got them with the vented disk option and the alloy flanges (lol, flange). Couldn't wait to get them on so after I ceramic coated them yesterday I threw them on tonight for mock up.

kad5.jpg

kad6.jpg

The ride height is not set in the above picture nor is the car tracked, so please excuse the arch fitment and arse down look. I love them personally, I cant wait to use them in anger, if they preform like they look Il be well chuffed.

That point brings me to the next dilemma I faced, Sitting in the car the pedal box is just horrible, if your heels where resting on the floor it would be perfect but this just isnt going to happen. My initial plan was to chop the floor out and drop it in similar to how they do in some of the escorts or starlets, after thought however I think down the line thats going to cause an issue when the floor gets ripped out by a speed bump, what people wont realize is although it is not "slammed" you can just about get your foot in and lift the front.
This caused me a few sleepless nights, as an engineer by trade the problem solving aspect is something ive become relatively decent at , but I couldn't figure out a quick fix. So basically a few sleepless nights, an afternoon drinking unusual beers from M&S, 2 days of reading, youtube videos, about 20 hours CAD time and some calculations ( stand back, well back) ive got this ... ..............

pbox.jpg

It goes without saying but its far from finished, A fella building a 182 clio had talked about a similar issue in a youtube video and he chopped up a cheap pedal box, however it disappeared from his channel and it had me thinking why. I studied it for a while and it dawned on me that effectively what he done was reduce the force in the cylinder by doing it how he did and reduced the stroke, what ive got here is a solution that achieves the same required force/push but also achieves the stroke whilst resulting in minimal deviation of the MS central axis. Still loads of checks to do and also id like to get someone else to check my maths but I think it may solve the issue..

Was never going to be straight forward right?

If you made it through all that then I hope you found it interesting, personally most of the time I just look at the pictures.

But thanks for looking

This really is a spectacular build. I had contemplated going down a similar route with mine but I wouldn't have the patience to finish it. This really is a credit to you and a truly special little car

I've had issue before when masters arent installed in their normal horizontal position as intended, bleeding can be difficult. Although once bled, not an issue.

My clutch master is installed upright and it is an absolute ****er to bleed when it is installed ( and nightmare to unbolt and place horizontally to bleed...but if I do this it bleeds very easily )

I guess using the box to contour to the floor under your feet/subframe mount area would make it easier to make the entire thing more rigid anyway ? Seems a good move all round

Yes that was a concern of mine from the go, ive had 3 people say near word for word what you just mentioned. When i looked at the mini floor pan i made up an angle gauge out of 2 hacksaw blades the traced it to paper, I think the floor angle is 40 from memory. When i started the model I put the cylinders in knowing that a steep angle had a negative effect both on the pedal force and the bleed. I think it ended up around the 23 degree mark, thankfully this should allow me to put the rear of the car on a set of matching ramps to then make the cylinder horizontal. That logic makes sense in my head anyway.

For the base plate I feel that you could add alot of strength with say 2 or 3mm plate and fold or 2 and as you say having the sub frame right behind it adds a fairly substantial structural point to push against . Compared to normal floors of that era that would near be tank spec

Its always good to have input from others, often from experience Ive found the things that cause the most heartache and blow back are simple things that are overlooked.

Its def taken alot of patience thats for sure, Im to far in now to give up and if Im ever in the position that I need to flog it to fund another project a 3/4 finished project is a tough sell even for the best sales man.

Haha, its nice to be able to do things like that, No doubt its a great tool and you defiantly see more of it being introduced into hobby level projects. 3d printing is something I feel is going to change peoples ability to take on small plastic parts that is in keeping with modern vehicles for stuff like interior trim or even at the other end of the spectrum moulds for DIY fiber glass projects. There is then people like me who have an idea but lack the fine fabrication skills, few hours and a drawing pack and you can then give it to someone to weld or machine without them billing hours to work the hard stuff out.

looking fantastic mate, prob my favourite part of this thread is that you can actually read your brain cogs turning as you where typing lol. so appreciate the self thought fixes you are doing and pushing the boundaries of what is possible lol

I looked at your pedal box, and thought 'how is he resting his feet comfortably on that'

then read on and seen your fixes lol! brilliant!! keep it up, and I sill can't wait to see it in the metal

Been getting ready for another stint of working at the car. Something I’ve put off for a few months was painting the arches, in prep for fitting the rear window I thought I’d drop them off and paint the rears as a start. Opted for a satin black finish, rubbed down, primed them, blocked with 320, primed again and then 500 before top coat. Overkill most likely but left a nice finish so I’m happy.

this left me in a position to put the rear glass in for the first time in 5 years, still a bit to go but was a milestone.

with the rear screen in I was able to fish the petrol tank out of storage, stripped it and cleaned it out

with the pump out I decided to do some research on what it was capable of, long story short is it seems a bit of an unknown so decided to get myself a 255lph pump ordered, long term plan is to run the 255 in tank with a regulator on the return, if I find myself tracking it or doing the sprints i will then fit a swirl pot with an external pump to feed the rail.

I’m just waiting on some terminals to crimp the power and ground to the underside of the lid and it’s good to bolt together.

with the tank on the verge of going back in I had to finalise some fuel lines and fittings, I’ve ordered that many of the buggers in the last 2 years I could sell them. Originally the plan was to bulkhead them and run them internally, I’ve now opted to run them under the car wrapped in heat sleeve tied up into the tunnel, main call on this was to prevent the fuel smell. Ordered up a vent, filter , line and fittings

hopefully get the feed line run and the vent in before the end of the weekend.

Next task was to pin down the ecu and power distribution, ecu I have made a call on in the form of a dta. I will get that from Steven at sg performance in the next month or so, the power will be taken care of by an AIM pdm 32, fully solid state, no fuses, relays or clutter. Opted for the pdm and dash display option, if you plan on going digi dash with a gps and the extra looms it’s the guts of £1400, for not much more you get a full package. Was a no brainier in my eyes atleast. Overkill?, most definitely, needed? Probably not, did I want it? He’ll yes, I do love the guchi bits. Bit of a wait on the screen but below shows what I’m talking about

Photo above shows the can key pad, should be able to use this for everything other than the main power on key to provide power to the pdm, everything is programmable and is 4 wires, put it into perspective with 12 normal switches you have 3 wires for every switch in the form of a power ground and led if fitted.

Fingers crossed it’s what I hope it is, speak to anyone on the industry and they tell you it’s the way forward.

Need to get the finger out and draw up some mounting plates, should probably finish the pedal box drawing aswell.

thanks for looking

PDM is a Lovely Piece of kit!

in my eyes the pdm just fitted the build, simplify everything and keep it minimal, to me the extra money you’d put into relays, time and the likes of a steering wheel switch panel wouldn’t be far of the cost of the pdm and dash package. Granted it takes time to learn the software but I think I’d be happy to tackle it as you have less chance for error not having to wire relays, Size the wire correct and should just be a case of running wire to pins. Idea of being able to be a pretend race car driver with the logging around Kirkstown is neat aswell. GPS speedo is a big plus for me as I didn’t put the Speedo drive into the straight cut box 🤦🏻.

Nice one Jayme. The satin finish in the arches is the perfect look.

Loving the pdm too. I've been looking at them for ages and the functionality of them is amazing

When I get stuck in your more than welcome to come down for the day check it out for yourself. Looking forward to seeing what the fuss is about.

I'll definitely take you up on that at some point. I'd love a nosey around it

Don't do it Connor. I find anytime I talk to Jayme I end up with a bigger and more expensive list of parts for the car :joy:

Pdm looks a great bit of kit and would tidy up wiring nicely....

Tanks back in, tried to leave it with the lines all routed in a way that made it easy to install. Worked out really well, pretty happy with it. Also managed to get the the filter all mounted in the original location, should make servicing it easy

Had to order another 7m of line, thought I’d have atleast got the feed line run but to my shock it’s a lot more line than I thought.

cheers for looking

Next level dude 👍 definitely was the way to go with this build and suits everything else. Can't wait to hear it fired up and on Stevens rollers at DynoTune .. amazing noise in there . I bet him and Alan will love this build. Dare I say it's one of the best proper project car builds in a long time on here?!
