On the RMS Blog: Before Top Gear and Sabine Schmitz brought sex appeal of the Nurburgring, there were plenty of other complete nutcases hell bent to conquer the hallowed lap record.

Porsche tuning house Ruf built this 470bhp twin turbo monster 911 known as the CTR Yellowbird back in 1987 and put this video together, kick starting the lap-time frenzy that we all know and love.

Ruf test driver Stefan Roser pedals hard despite sporting that casual '80s 'European Vacation' look of t-shirt and loafers with socks. (Read the Full Article Here)

I see the video on one of them dodgy german channels years ago, then managed to buy the VHS from Ruf a few years later....long before internet !

I'm sure there is a little editing in there, but still one of the best car driving videos about.

You can see it in certain corners unless its just a glitch.

Great video none the less, its a joy to watch all that sliding about!

There are one or two definite edits, but most does look like a bloody well driven continuous lap.

More so given the reputation for dodgy handling the Porsches used to have. In his hands it looks superbly balanced.

Oh aye, even a porsche in Forza 5 can be a handful haha, he deals so well with the traffic and stepping it out around them!

Watched this over and over years ago. Awesome considering at the time, no uk motoring journalists would risk putting a 911 turbo much out of shape.
Also extra points for wearing loafers and tee shirt..

EDIT: Watched it again on a bigger screen this morning, I don't think I'll ever get sick of this video. Was thinking that at the time, the 911 Turbo had a proper 'widowmaker' tag which helps set this in context. Going up the hill from the Exmuhle he is pulling big speeds and the in-car doesn't convey how big the elevations are, that's a long steep climb. He's in fifth going through Kesselchen and swings the wheel a quarter turn either way to keep it on track. Wow.
