Cheers! Need to get the gear selector and coilovers next to help mocking things up, so expensive few months ahead.

Other side inner wing is spot on, so very happy there.

It was meant to be a quick engine swap and tidy up....

Bit more progress last weekend. Bit more tidying on the welds then it will be time for light skims of filler on the inner wing / chassis leg parts. A lot more work on the bulkhead to be done before it's at that stage!

Happy with how much of the seamsealer I've got out, a lot of cars are let down by this not being done neatly in the bays in my opinion.

Got the passenger rain gutter off this evening without bending it which was a relief. Not looking forward to taking the drivers sode one off.
IMG_20210222_194652.jpg

Got the rust cut out on the passenger side scuttle too and the beginnings of the repair panels made up.
IMG_20210222_194715.jpg

IMG_20210222_194735.jpg

Now having to finish up cleaning the welds in the bay and bare metal ready for filler. Another hateful job!

Had the exact same problem on mine on that inner wing
Mine was way worse than that. Ended up extending the sunroof tubes right down to the bottom of wing. (if yours has a sunroof that is)

Yep, sunroof model.

Sounds like a good idea, need to make sure they're well cleaned out too. Whilst it has been garaged pretty much continuously since it was taken off the road in the 90s the drains could well be full of crap, guessing there are rear sunroof tubes too?

Should be some pics in there

The rear sunroof tubes from memory come below the rear lights area should see the tube if you look in the inside behind rear arch

Bits welded in to the scuttle, need to do a little more tidying and then time for seamsealer.

IMG_20210226_113536.jpg

Today was spent getting the bulkhead panel made and welded in.

Again, a bit of tidying to do before we go much further but threw some etch over it to see how it looks. Happy with it for something knocked together with my da. Just as a reminder, this is what the piece that came out of it was like:

The past week has been expensive.

I ordered the front top mounts, coilovers, and front hubs.

Top mounts are just neat looking so should fit in with the finished engine bay.

Coilovers are H & R deep from Still Static, and will be waiting about a month more for them.

Front hubs are from a German crowd called Epytec and will change the pcd to 5 x 100 for the new wheels. Hoping that these will work ok with the mk2 spindles (they are meant to).

Radiator arrived, just went for a mishimoto one for a mk3 vr6.
IMG_20210307_173924.jpg

Nearly have the loom out of the TT too (no photos of that, its a mess). Engine is out too. Its going to need a lot of tidying never mind the preventative maintenance I want to do while its out.
IMG_20210228_175619.jpg

Gave the gearbox a bit of a clean too, again will be getting more tidying done.
IMG_20210228_175159.jpg

The compomotives are getting packed up and couriered this week too, my mate sent me a photo of them all cleaned up. Looking forward to getting them!
IMG-20210307-WA0003.jpg

Also got the seamsealer and gravitex done on the passenger inner wing.

Safe to say this car has stopped being a quick turn around and use it thing. I am hoping it'll be to a similar standard to my E34, except quicker (until the E34 gets its turbo etc).

Do you mind me asking what you used to spray the gravitex with? Just a HVLP or the schultz gun?

It looks a nice finish there, and want to redo the sills on the E28 so I can be sure they're sealed up right

I just used a schultz gun for it. A lot of it is down to prep on the panel.

I did the back arches on my e34 but just didn't do the prep as well and it didn't stick well at all. Seems to have taken well to the golf though thankfully!

Only thing is it does dry a bit more grey than black. But is ok to overpaint. Just thinking for e28 sills.

Thanks @cauld1, I think that's what I'll do. I wonder from factory do they just over paint with the base metallic colour or just go non metallic?

Whoever did it last time mustn't have prepared it too well as it's chipping off. I'll just take it back to bare metal and cross my fingers I don't find any holes :worried:

Some minor updates, some more money spent too!

The good news is that the coilovers and front top mounts are on their way to me.

I ended up buying Eibach upgraded anti roll bars and whiteline camber bolts the week before last.
IMG_20210328_131802.jpg

IMG_20210328_131828.jpg

Got the drivers side front inner wing sealed and gravitexed.
IMG_20210328_143856.jpg

A bit more working on the engine bay, nearly at the point where the painter can take over i.e the out of our depth point.

IMG_20210328_143956.jpg

Over next weekend I hope to get the inside of the bulkhead tidied, seamsealed and gravitexed as well.

Took the rear axle off. Overall underneath is good. Few bits to be fixed at the passenger side.

IMG_20210328_144116.jpg

Waiting on a new passenger side chassis leg repair panel to take the repair bits we need off to fix it up.

More excitingly I ordered a CAE shifter. I have a Coolerworx one in my e34 which is great, but wanted a CAE for this car, so went a bit treat yo self on it.

I went for uncoated with an anodised grey knob, so should look like this:
Screenshot_20210328_143612_com.android.chrome.jpg

With standard interior there will be a bit of cutting but is doable. Everything else inside will be standard for the first while anyway.

I have the car booked in for paint in September or potentially earlier if a space opens up. We want to do a dry build first to work out where lines and wiring etc will be run so gives time to do all that.

Hopefully thats the last of the frightening big spends in single transactions for a while now 😂.

Had a few unproductive weekends where I just couldn't be arsed doing much to this.

Did a quick bolt up of one of the shocks to see how the top mounts would look. Big improvement over black plastic caps in my opinion.
IMG_20210403_175332.jpg

Got a pair of 16v hubs from a friend as this leaves a lot more options for big brakes. With a bit of work, got the wheel bearings out of them. New ones ordered. Bought new front lower arms and took the balljoints and bushes off them.
IMG_20210425_161206.jpg

Reason for stripping the arms is that I'm waiting for these.
image0-2-scaled.jpeg

mk2-plus-flip-bushes.jpg

Spherical bearings and extended ball joints from Noath Engineering. Have also ordered steering rod end flip bushes from them.
mk1andmk2-flip-kits-3.jpg

The idea is that this will prevent bunp steer, correct roll steer and the lower wishbone angle while running the car low.

I ended up ordering pretty much of the last of the suspension bits today too, powerflex rear top mounts, steering rack bushes and rear axle bushes. I think its just the rear stubs, bearings and hubs and front drop links and thats it able to roll again. Essentially need to do all this to see how much work needs done on tbe rear arches etc.

Also bought a bit more 'ohh shiny' for the engine. Allows the replacement of the horrible plastic 'crack pipe' that runs across the front of the engine.

Great project!

have you heard of these guys? When I was interested in doing something similar to a mk1 they had conversion kits available. Might be a good place to look for getting the loom sorted when matching the management to the old clocks if you haven’t considered it.

Also DG motorsports have some nice stuff too, a set of TB’s on this would be amazing.

subbed!

Thanks! The electrics is the side of it that concerns me a bit, I know it has all been done before on these, but I am strongly considering running a standalone in any case just for future proofing to some extent.

I looked at DG Motorsport, wow. Could be very tempted to message them to get a rough price. I expect I'll need to sit down, but sure. Would make the engine bay, never mind the noises!

This is awesome so far.

You really are doing it right as they say no short cuts being taken here.

Cheers Tufty, hopefully it turns out ok!

I'll be honest it's got a bit OTT by this stage given what the intention was for it originally. On that note, Muecke front wings ordered, 3.2 cm wider that standard so should give a bit more room.
