Volvo 740s are the perfect day to day modern classic or youngtimer as the Germans like to call them. Yes they use a bit more petrol than a modern petrol but you have nil depreciation and no finance to worry about. Plus you won't often find another one in a car park. Unless you are at a local Volvo meet of course. See the one for sale on Usedcarsni being sold by Suckindiesel of this parish. Go and try one. You probably won't go back to a modern.

Don't know about that although there's a bloke in Ballyclare who has a low miles late model 480. He also has two 002 BMWs and a very low miles S70 which he uses during the winter. Possibly him. Haven't seen a 480 for yonks.

Wow, didn't think it had been 4 years since I updated this!

Seems these retro wagons are becoming popular now. Not many changes over the past 4 years, mainly the wheels!

I won a competition on Facebook a few weeks back of an exterior valet from Tennant Mobile Valeting, highly recommend this guy, the pictures are his before & after shots. I've very impressed!

Well, with life this thing has kind of been pushed to the side, and I'm annoyed at myself for letting that happen, it has really only been used with very little TLC given but that has changed.
With current lock down I've been working from home so over Easter I decide to tackle a few jobs I've been putting off / not had time to do. I'm calling this COVIDTANCE2020.

First up was wheel colour.

I sold the previous 5 spoke wheels in favour of some 960 (Nova) wheels I'd wanted for as long as I've had the car, got a set, fitted them, HATED THEM! So off they came and I was given a set of 940 Celebration wheels.

The wheels were in good condition - and free! Did I mention that already? But I missed the look of the white wheels, so that was the plan.

Wheels off, washed inside and out ready for rub down and prep
20200411_151459.jpg
20200411_151505.jpg

Next was the rub down and prep work. Found some corrosion I hadn't noticed previously. No fillers required, I rubbed down the corrosion, couple of coats of primer and rubbed down again, spent about 2 days on the prep as I know putting the effort into the prep will be rewarded in the finish.
20200412_153317.jpg
20200412_153324.jpg

Next stage was to let the air out of the tyres and mask up the bits I didn't want painted.
I made some cards up from some Coke Zero multipack boxes and finished off with a ring of masking tape. Also taped the valve and the wheel nut holes as I did want hassle of wheel nuts loosening as the paint moved / squashed / flattened.
20200413_142325.jpg
20200414_140957.jpg
20200414_143450.jpg

Centre caps also masked up and primed. 2 coats of primer done twiceworking on 2 wheels at a time followed by a wet sand to remove some dirt and a couple of runs then ready for top coat.
20200414_143500.jpg

Top coat applied and using the same method as the primer, a coat on each of the 2 wheels twice then a second round after touch dry finishing off with 2 coats of clear lacqure following the same method. All done using rattle cans in the open air. Finished off with a coat of wax once left to harded for 24 hours.
20200416_205132.jpg
20200416_205141.jpg

With tyres cleaned and dress the wheel went back onto the car - nearly a week later! I spent about a day on each stage but when I say a day, I completed that stage and left the next stage to the next day. If I had worked continuosly I would probably have been 3 days total.
Before fitting the wheels I decided to have a look at the brakes as I had felt as if one brake wasn't releasing properly and sure enough both rear calipiers had 1 seized piston and one front piston was also sticking.
Once the wheel were refitted I moved next to bodywork. The car hadn't had a proper clean since Matt (above) done it for me last March. The body was washed, clayed and finished off with a waterless wash n wax with the interior vacuumed and dash / plastics treated.

So - massive update
Also - Happy Andy! As many know I suffer depression and cleaning / maintaining this car helps improve my mood. It's been a long time since this car has looked this good (my opinion and yes I'm biased) now I just need lockdown to end so I can enjoy driving this again.

I've more photo's and another update, mechanic this time - to follow....

Theres a few bits of surface rust need attention so will probably get that sorted over the winter months, I have replacement drivers wing and door but I'm going to speak to KRCR before making any big decisions. The car is all original panels and 90% original paint and as it gets older those things will become more important.
But yes, I do have plans to paint the splitter, need to order some body colour paint in a aerosol but would prefer to get it locally to try and get the best colour match.
I also have a set of front fog lamps and all the fittings, just need the front splitter to go with them. Or adapt this one.

Another job I've been putting off - charging system. I had the alternator overhauled about 4 / 5 years ago but it was never right. Been check over a couple of times and the conclusion was the alternator had to many birthdays, I suppose at 200k it's no shame. It did charge the battery but it could not maintain voltage when lights etc where on, charging normally around 12.8v dropping down to 11.5v with load, sometimes even as low as 10v.
I found an altrernator in my stock of RWD Volvo bits, bearings felt smooth, rings looked good, brushes where knackered - probably why it was removed from whatever it was removed from. Swapped the brush pack from the current alternator and replaced the alternator - BOOM 13.5V mainatined with load, only dropping to 12.8v with lots of accessories on.

Before and after shot of the mudflaps. Fro years I thought these should be black, turns out they are grey. Product used on plastics is Maguires Trim and plastic restorer. I think I will do them with boot polish to make them black, repaint the lettering - sometime.....

And finally for now, seen a guy on the Skoda owners pages was doing these stickers, £3 posted with proceeds going to the NHS, so I got 2.

Thats me done for now - starting to feel like one of Surprising Skoda's updates :joy:

Not much to update on this one. Still having a charging issue, the best it will charge at is 13.8V which I would be happy with if it would hold that voltage under load. With lights, cooling fan and wipers on the charging drops to around 10v. I've changed the alternator, replaced with a new brush pack / voltage regulator and the fault remains so I've concluded its an issue with the car, my next plan is to check engine earths and connections.

Nevertheless it hasn't stopped me putting it to work. My partner bought herself a caravan, the one pictured in my Skoda thread belonged to a friend of hers. A 5 birth come up for sale locally for decent money so we viewed and bought. I was down visiting with the Volvo so what better why to hold traffic up on the Ballynahinch Road from Clough than to tow a caravan with a Volvo
20200814_181504.jpg

Her tumble dryer broke down the next day so I decided on my way home I would drop it off to GHD repairs in Dundonald to have a look at, to say his face was a picture to see a dryer in the boot of a saloon car was an understatement!
20200815_093726.jpg

Otherwise as you would expect with a Volvo, its all pretty uneventful! Spent Saturday giving the old girl a clean as she hadn't even had a wash since the wheels where refitted!

I think the question I must ask, does she diff?

Love this car, and frankly the bit that for me most excited is that it's got a graphic equaliser for the head unit!

That shade of the white on the wheels annoys me (i know it shouldn't but it does), it would look a million times better if they matched the colour of the car. But thats the only thing about it that annoys me :grinning:

I do agree, would have liked a creamier white myself but it was a covidtenance thing last year. I probably will get an aerosol of the cars colour made up and redo them

Well, in typical Andy standard, prep for the #Volvo600 was very last minute, and as it was such a last minute push, not many pic's were taken!

In prep, the 740 got a full service and timing belt, full kit from Volvo in Swansea delivered for under £60! Also removed the inlet manifold and cleaned out the engine breathers along with the air flow meter etc. New discs & pads on all four corners, calipers freed or replaced and identified blockage from the Master Cylinder stopping one of the twin pistons working on the drivers caliper. (MOT hat on) - For those that think the brake test is difficult to pass, this thing passed MOT with only half the caliper working on the drivers side! Being fussy, it wasn't acceptable for me, hence why I went looking to see why the 16% imbalance was in the front brakes. Also had a new track rod end and ball joint fitted and alignment done, which required the freeing up of the track rods / locking nuts etc. 4 New (to it) tyres also fitted. I found 4 Continentals like brand new from a Mk7 Golf for £90!

So, after all that work, the car I don't think has ever ran of drive as well in the 20+ years I've owned it. Almost a 600 mile round trip completed in 36 hours for the world record attempt at Elvington Airfield. I have attached some pics I took at the event but this does not cover the shear size and volume of Volvo's in one place! Very honoured and proud to have taken part in such an event and its a great piece of history to go with the car. Regardless if we broke the record or not, the weekend away and road trip in the 740 made the weekend worthwhile.

So, the pic's......
First up, the drivers front brake disc, some of the fact chipped off with the beating it took to get them off, but I think I got my money's worth!

Then on to the cosmetic prep, it got a hand polish, wiper arms painted and I hit the mudflaps with a heat gun.

So as most of you know (or maybe don't) the Volvo was vandalised outside my house. The car was away to NI Accident Management at the beginning of August to have this fixed along with some other cosmetic rust etc. To say I'm over the moon with the results is an understatement, Mark and his team have done an amazing job, just the lift I needed on an otherwise **** week!
Still needs a clean and polish but I'm delighted with the results, Mark even sorted the wheel arches for me, which wasn't part of the original plan.

So, in the words of you youngsters, stripe delete completed. Sadly at some point prior to my ownership the passenger wing and door have seen paint and the chose to mask the stripe rather than remove and replace. The result, a step in the paint which I tried to flatten but sadly the paint below wasn't very thick and rubbed through. With the rest of the paint in such good order now, this will annoy me and will need fixed. But here are some pics of before, after and during. Stripe removed, glue removed, paint buffed and polished. Still roof and boot lid to buff but very happy with how the car is looking now.
