Need advice - increasingly thinking there is something very fishy going on with this car. Was sent a video of the car that was clearly an older video (given the price tag on it) and have repeatedly asked for videos of the exterior and interior of the car as in today and haven't been sent any.

There is definitely still outstanding HP on the car as confirmed with BMW Finance this morning and the finance is outstanding from February 2020. The pictures in the advert (that I posted here) are from an advert in December 2019 and I'm presuming they then sold the car in Feb with a reg change in March 2020. From their instagram it looks like the car then came back to them at the start of July 2020 and they've had it ever since. When I questioned them they said they sold it and then took it back as part ex from a regular customer. I'm thinking they don't actually have the car on site at all and cannot understand their reluctance to send me an up to date video of it.

Paid them a deposit last Friday and have the finance documents approved and waiting to sign but I'm getting a bad feeling about this and strongly thinking of telling them to refund my deposit and forget about it. Am I being overly cautious here or does anyone else think something isn't quite adding up?

Could be on sale or return for a customer. There are plenty of dealerships operate that way, especially with this pedigree of car. Probably a very regular customer and they clear his HP once its sold

That I would totally understand and be fine with but the fact he is telling me that isn't the case and that as far as he was aware there was no outstanding finance etc is making me very suspicious. Told me yesterday morning he would get it confirmed in writing it was cleared but still nothing.

Where's the dealership? If you're on Pistonheads or any other UK forum it would be worth asking for opinions, or even if anyone is near would they swing past and see if they can spot the car there.

I would also be concerned with their reluctance to send you a current video of the car, this would be a normal request from anyone buying a car in this way, let alone something of that value

As above a current video and confirmation of HPI clear should be easy for them to provide and take no time. I would shoot off an email giving them either to the end of today or if you are feeling generous give them to this time tomorrow to provide both those otherwise you want your deposit back.

Have just emailed asking for deposit back. They’re taking the piss. Any other dealers have had a video sent over before even talking finance so for these to have sent me finance documents to sign without so much as a current video and using December 2019 pics in an advert is not on. Very disappointed.

Some of the online reviews (old and recent) would make me hesitant.
If it were me and they were stalling on providing information on the HPI and a recent video i'd be asking for my deposit back - they're standard requests and should take no time to answer.
Obviously everyone views situations differently but they're a professional looking dealer so it's only right to expect a professional service.

It’s not the level of professionalism I’d expect when buying a car like that, I’d let it pass. Better to be safe than sorry.

I have seen S3's and RS3's sit in their forecourt for months without moving - always look past them when looking at cars tbh

Baffles me why you would even leave a deposit with the above issues?

When I search cars on the mainland I tend to look only at the Main dealers as I feel they are a bit more secure. There are of course some high level super car dealers to which my comments above don’t apply but that wasn’t the market I was looking at.

Well it turns out sending an email requesting your money back makes things happen. Sent me the video, apologised profusely and gave me an explanation - just wish they'd been so upfront from the very start and there wouldn't have been an issue. Nerves are settled now :joy:

Properly a facetime/whatsapp video chat will sort the nerves out? An old technology in today's standard...
It should really only takes about 10 mins to walk around the car explain everything via whatsapp video.

They have great inventory, glad they could clear the matters up for you even if you had to nearly back out for them to do it.

Car looks hard as nails, love it!

I assume the car is still under Mercedes warranty.
If anything goes wrong i wouldn`t want to be relying on them if they can`t even do the basics right selling you a very expensive car.
