Hi squad,

Sorted my mum out with a lovely wee Audi A1 sport back a year ago now from Lakeland Audi (worth it for the drive alone) and it has just come out of Audi Belfast only needing a brake fluid change.

They did however delightfully advise me that the car is now due its timing belt done and that comes at a delicious sum of 600 smackers. I actually sharted a little when she told me that but we all had masks on so it was undetected.

The car has a 2 year Audi warranty and I will likely extend that for her as the car only has 30K on it so most certainly don't want to do anything to affect that.

My question is, am I really stuck with dealership work on this one?

I had a look myself thinking that I could do it using genuine Audi stuff but then I saw that it looks to have variable cam timing on both cams so completely tapped out of that one. Clio 172 belts are bad enough with variable cam timing on one side ffs.

As a side note, I thought I was getting her the sensible 1.4 TFSI model but "accidentally" got her the 140BHP COD one and I am hugely surprised at the way that little thing shifts all while returning unreal economy. Wouldn't half mind seeing how the S1 shifts.

Cracking wee car, wife has the 1.4TFSI 185bhp with the flappy paddles and it’s a complete giggle..... following this with some interest!

I’d check the handbook and see when Audi recommends the belt be changed rather than what Audi Belfast recommends?

I bought a genuine Timing belt kit And water pump and got it installed by vat registered garage with receipt for parts and fitting.
That’s covered and keeps warranty intact. Was less than half the price above.

It’s a wonder they didn’t mention this deal. Brings it to a slightly more palatable £498 for belt and water pump.

Terms and Conditions Apply* Audi diesel vehicles only, up to 2.0L, Excludes Audi TT, all S and RS models. Savings based on an Audi A4 saloon (2008 up to 2015) 2.0L TDI CR 6 Speed Manual. Offer ends 30/09/2020

Thanks for the replies guys, mum is leaning towards just going Audi as it is her pride and joy and I most certainly don't want to steer her in the event of an issue

When my 1.4tsi Leon needed done I priced it at Seat and also a local independent specialist. There was only about £4 price difference and the independent wasn’t using genuine parts.

On my 1.4, the water pump is on the opposite side of the engine to the timing belt so didn’t need done as it has a completely different service interval and is easy to get it.
Would be worth checking where it is on the Audi 1.4 as I’m sure it’s a very similar engine (mine is version before COD).
