Looks great. HTD.

Looked at couple of these last year for Mrs T to fart about in over the Summer. One derv which was "just outta England" and had a 80k shave and two 1.8 t's that I don't think had seen a service from new. They're a lot of car for humble money if you get a good one.

Excellent. Health to enjoy the school kids on the bus beside you in traffic squirting you with water as you sit in traffic. Happened me was great fun.

Unfortunately I don't work school hours! 😂

They hang around just outside of the business park I work at lobbing water balloons in though.

Nice simple wee tidy up thanks to a new eBay switch. Old one was a mess.

Nice job. Do you have a link to that?

You would pay £120 odd from Audi.

Pop it out and double check the part number. I accidentally ordered the wrong one. It's still to arrive so I'm probably just going to pull the front fascia off it and swap with the OEM one and keep as a spare. It was even cheaper - like £7 odd from Poland!

Noticed the water pump was whirring and it was leaking oil. Took me forever to get round to what turned out to be a hour job.

Old and new pump

Cam cover off and seal replaced.

Got these last year (!!) though it was about time to stick them in.

More work trying to sort the leak. Was wazzing out oil a couple of weeks ago so needed urgent investigation. This is the cooler bypass (cooler not needed in the UK) and a likely suspect.

IMG_20190920_095352631.jpg

Out of the car. The seals had hardened and were brittle.

Cleaned and assembled.

Oil and filter change while I was at it. Hopefully that sorts it!

Previous owner mentioned the cam belt had been done recently and the car was just serviced. Once I had the car in front of me it was obvious that neither was true. The joys of buying unseen on eBay.

Nothing for it than getting stuck in.

Decided I didn't fancy going this far for a while so tensioner, idlers, thermostat, pump, seals and even the thermostat housing were all replaced with new stuff.

Also did a service, replaced the engine mounts which were more easily accessible, new coolant reservoir and cap and rocker gaskets. It also got a new dryer for the a/c and some seals and hoses changed.

Aligned the cams.

IMG_20190928_111155027.jpg

And yeah. Looks like it's not lining up. Stretched belt or poor attempt at a change in the past?

IMG_20190928_111200041.jpg

New belt timed up.

And new accessory belt too.

Back together

Running great :grinning:

Oh and rocker gaskets done.

All it needs now is headlights buffing, front wings looking at and seeing as every fluid has now been changed bar brake fluid, will probably do that.

You've got balls of steel taking that on.

Have you changed the power steering fluid?

If not, make sure you get the mineral based stuff (green cap on the reservoir). It's confusing as when you go to Audi for it they give you the synthetic stuff, which unhelpfully has the same part number as the 'older' and correct mineral based CHF 7.1 fluid which they don't suppy any more. It's a case of 'computer says no' with them.

Apparently the synthetic stuff can damage the seals in the hydraulic system that were meant for mineral based hydraulic fluid only. I can give you the exact spec and no. of the correct FEBI fluid if you need.

Yeah I did the PAS fluid. I saw mention of mineral and to be honest stuck some universal stuff from the motorfactors in which said it'd do most systems. Might need to get that number from you.

What a tramp telling you it had been done.

"Just serviced for the new owner"

Oil filter had surface rust on it and air filter bogging. Stamp in the book and all!

"Timing belt not long done, you don't want to buy one of these without the belt having been changed"

Aye - in 2011, 30k ago!

Ah well. To be honest I really enjoyed doing it and could do it again pretty quickly, plus I'm happier I've had a good root around and it's all in great shape.

More annoyed at myself for putting the wrong PAS fluid in. That's not like me at all but I didn't even think. Idiot.

Fair play to you Coog! The thought of doing that lot myself sends shivers down my back 😂

At least you know everything is done now and done properly

You have the most brilliantly eclectic mix of cars @Coog . I always enjoy reading about your random purchases when they come up!

Fair play for getting stuck in and doing the work yourself. It's always very satisfying to attempt something like that and come out the other side with a decent result! :grinning:

Front wings next on the list. Still not finished but nearly there and what a nightmare it has been tbh.

Anyway this wing had previous repair and rust round the outer lip so took it back to metal and a few coats of por15 in and out.

IMG_20191025_101829369.jpg

Dusted with primer and then cleaned it back to the edge of the arch lip

IMG_20191108_110711156.jpg

Blew the paint up to the swage line

IMG_20191110_105622724.jpg

Then sanded the lot, including the unpainted top part.

IMG_20191126_094343998.jpg

Lacquer'd with a lap onto the unpainted but now sanded part

IMG_20191126_104417723.jpg

And then cut back with a wet sand and buff.

I'm not a fan of these but this one looks great. Brilliant colour combo and the new wheels look well.
