Audi A5 3.0 TDI - Sleeper Project

Copy and paste from the WDYDTYCT thread - this is purely here for my own progress monitoring 😂

2008 A5 3.0 TDI - 217k high miler. Full history, well looked after by one Audi specialist since 2015 and Poole Audi before that.

Went for this particular year due to the more favoured CCWA engine with the Garrett GTB2260VK and the ZF 6 speed 6HP28 auto with a higher torque limit

Easy to get these to 450bhp with an intercooler, hybrid turbo and a Bosch CP3 fuel pump and are Uber reliable taking it too so that’s my end goal.

The heated cream interior wouldn’t have been my first choice but after a thorough inspection yesterday of the engine, drivetrain and suspension and the price I paid for it, I can live with it - plus because it’s not a S-line (it’s a strangely spec’d Sport) it will be somewhat of a sleeper when I’m done 😏

I will be of course adding some OEM+++++ mods to make it a wee bit more nicer, facelift clocks, facelift climate unit and rear LED tails to name but a few ☺️

First and foremost however are fluid changes - it’s been all recorded before as being done but just for my own peace of mind, gearbox flush, PAS fluid, brake fluid, rear diff, coolant.

I have to say I’m a bit in awe of all Forum members who have the wherewithal to do the mechanics themselves; they often get a nice motor with a nice engine. Bravo!

I can do most myself but @pobmk4 always gets the short straw when it comes to the more involving jobs, which he really (does not) loves 😂😂😂

All fluids noted above have been changed as planned at the start of the week.

To my surprise the gearbox oil has been looked after. It’s only been a drop and fill as the filter was dated 2008 but it was better than not being done at all I suppose. Fully flushed with Liqui Moly cleaner and Top Tec 1800 ATF along with a new filter (y)

Going to put some more miles on it then it’ll be going straight to Stage 2 (Egr, dpf, swirl delete) after the new year - then start saving for a hybrid turbo, a massive intercooler, "cat back" exhaust and a Bosch CP3 fuel pump which will take it directly to Stage 4

All in all, a good solid car and a good, reliable base to work on.

Some OEM++++ mods en-route :grinning:

Nothing exciting to update apart from getting a haul of OEM++++ parts from a car in Scotland;

Electric folding mirrors (the thinner non-dumbo style 2010+)I have a set of auto dimming glass so I’ll fit those too, came with highline door controllers and the mirror switch and trim diagram thing. One of the mirror caps is slightly scuffed but I’ve a set of genuine RS5 mirror caps spare I’ll fit.

Full set of facelift 2012+ led taillights

Front S5 brake carriers (turns out my existing 3.0 TDI calipers are identical and just needed the carriers). Need new discs and pads anyway so may aswell upgrade to 345mm while I’m here

And finally, rear S5 brake calipers and carriers with handbrake motors. Again, may aswell upgrade to 330mm when the time comes 😂

Are you going to let it sing a little more, these 3.0 tdi v6 sound rather tuneful when done nicely (though still only rev to 4500rpm? Frustratingly)

What sort of power output have you got at the moment?

My 2nd XF was a 3.0L TDi and had 300HP in stock form - and that was no slouch - so looking forward to seeing what you get!

240 standard, the engine in the facelift cars were 245 but their tuning capabilities are limited by the gearbox.

When will this be for sale? 😁

Unfortunately unless its damaged, it won't be! Couldn't sell it here anyway with the miles, sure anything over 100k in NI is scrap ;)

ZF6 limited to 600Nm(?) - should still give you a fair lick of acceleration.

Sure mileage (like age) is just a number 😂
Plenty of miles on Mia Khalifa, but I'd still do her at the right £ 👍🏻

Somehow I’ve managed to nearly do 2000 miles in this - glad to say no immediate issues!

Got the folding mirrors fitted over the Christmas weekend (was oncall and needed something to do!), new switch fitted, fold on lock activated and the door trim panel drilled for the new switch position.

Fitted the new highline door controllers which came along with the package, note the controllers on the right being fully pinned.

I’m in 2 minds whether to keep the RS mirror caps however, I’ll see how things go.

@Woodcutter P&C’s should have me some new TRW braking parts during the week so I’ll get those fitted with the S5 carriers.

Awaiting a couple of parts from online, one of which being the adapter harness for the rear led facelift tail lights.

Also ripped out the front seats this evening and gave the carpet a thorough hoover, seats and various trims a clean with Autoglym interior shampoo.

Needless to say it was stinking but that’s the joys with a cream interior, so rewarding seeing a dirty cloth!

Need to get the essentials out of the way first before any more power - but sorting those pretty steady!

Wheels keep on moving on the A5 (pics below and performance mods have started ;) )

S5 front brakes fitted, needed discs and pads so upgraded while I was doing the job. Thankfully no more judder! The next dry weekend I'll give the calipers a fresh coat of black.

Parrot bluetooth handsfree kit removed, OEM bluetooth module reinstated and a bluetooth adapter for the AMI unit in the glovebox, MMI also updated to the latest and last version, 55.7.0. Can't remember the last time I burned a CD, must've been at least 10 years

To finish off, OEM retrofit of LED number plate lights, surprisingly TPS list a kit for this (8K0 052 110) so came with the light units and small loom adapters. Not too bright and don't light the back of the car up like a spaceship. Awaiting securing clips for the facelift taillights which are unfortunately on back order but I will get them fitted asap when they do arrive.

Performance mods have started - Jetex non resonated rear system ordered, dual exit with 100mm tips, swirl flap delete kit (I will buy OE seals however)

Next month will be the DPF and EGR delete then the spicy Stage 2 Avon Tuning software along with TCU map ;) (310bhp & 620nm)

What Bluetooth adaptor did you go for if you don't mind me asking?

I'm using an adapter called Airdual Invery but you can also use a Bovee Tune2Air WMA1000 - check which is compatible with your infotainment system though, the MMI 2G in particular doesn't work with the Bovee for example.

Had a bit of a social media hiatus over the past couple of weeks but back fighting fit.

Exhaust fitted, it’s still quite muted due to the dpf still being present but the ‘solution’ is en route from Darkside ;) You can hear her a little more above 3000rpm however, a nice growl just wanting to escape.

What I didn’t realise is that the exhaust is made for the facelift rear valance so it looks a bit dopey and ilbred (check the manufacturer notes before ordering!) in its current form but a lot more free flowing and very much less restrictive than the OEM rear section. The 100mm tips take a bit of getting use to but the facelift valance should bring it all together.

The eagle eyed folk will notice the exhaust isn’t level, I need a new bracket which is en route also. My OCD would drive me insane if I left it like this.

After I sold the 19s to @Ruairi83 i was running a set of 17s for a few weeks until I found a set of 18s.

Picked these up from Facebook marketplace of all places! £150 8.5Jx18 ET29 and with the 15mm spacer, brings it to a very nice ET14. Came with 3 near enough brand new 245/40/18 Pirelli tyres and 1 budget due to a puncture but I’ll get that changed over soon.

I’ve booked to go the Nurburgring in the last week of March so I’ll get the Stage 2 bits buttoned up and a wheel alignment from @RubberLover beforehand.
