B5.5 Passat 130pd. Odd fluctuating synchro angle readings on VCDS

Have a 2005 Passat, AWX engine with 155k on it. Bought it as a project to get back on the road and use as a daily. White smoke at times that stings the eyes so possibly unburnt fuel.

I've checked it with VCDS and one fault code - fuel cooling pump relay open circuit/short to ground. The car doesn't have a fuel cooling pump or fuel cooling pump relay so I assume I can ignore that fault. The intank fuel pump is working fine.

The synchro angle reading (think it used to be called torsion value) is fluctuating on idle (engine up to normal temperature). Readings are jumping around, 0.6, 1.1, and 1.7.

Cambelt was done last at 118000 in March 2014 so probably need a belt change due to age.

Anyone know if it would be a crank or cam position sensor problem, timing belt or tensioner issue or something else?
