Fast diesels, just get a petrol you misers :-D
I'd give mk4 golfs a by ball, the petrol models weren't very special with the exception of the flawed but amazing sounding R32If i'd bought the equivelant petrol Mk4 Anniversary i'd have standard 30bhp more, but 63lbft less torque. plus to get me to my current 320lbft in a 1.8 petrol would cost a small fortune.
Plus the miser in me not only enjoys 19 more mpg, but the £155 tax versus the £315 for the petrol
They were miles ahead of a mk3 Golf and certainly better made than the mk5 that everyone raves about. The fact there’s so many of them still about is testament to this - not many Rovers/MG of any model, focuses have rotted away, as has a lot of the contemporary jap stuff. A decent 18t isn’t a bad car, safe handling, economical and cheap to repair/replace parts on, plus a couple of hundred quid gets you a healthy dollop of extra power. Not “special” by any stretch of the imagination but very competent - I’d rather an Anniversary than an r32I'd give mk4 golfs a by ball, the petrol models weren't very special with the exception of the flawed but amazing sounding R32

Wouldn't i correct in thinking that they weren't the most exciting steer in the hot hatch market?what was flawed about the mk4 r32?

I thought the mk5 was every bit as soulless as a mk4! Part of the criticism was that it was being compared to the Focus mk1 which was a great handling motor. I do know what you mean about the r32 though, it’s one of the most inefficient ways I know to turn petrol into noise and forward motion. I yearned for one, drove one, was heartbroken and thought it was just that car until I drove a second one!I have a soft spot for mk4s
But I had thought the general consensus was that the mk3 and mk4 gti's were rather mundane when it came to driving dynamics, and the mk5 "return to form of old, i.e.the mk1 and mk2
Having stripped multiple mk3s &mk4s for breaking in the past the mk4 is a fair jump in build quality.Definitely weren't as well screwed together as the MK3 IMO. Though they did drive (marginally) better and were far more modern.
