Ok, so I bought another number to put on the car. Certificate came today, I rang Swansea to ask if I could take my current cnp off and put on retention and put the new one straight on, I was told to take it off and wait for the log book before putting new one on. I said I would have to call my insurance twice to change numbers, once to the vehicles original number, and again to put new number on. She said, no just leave your current reg on and the log book should be there within 3-5 days and to do it then. Does that sound right?

Or you can do it online straight away without having to wait for the new V5
When you go through the process of changing to a new plate on their website, they give you the option of putting the existing plate on retention.
It fairly straightforward and there's a grace period for changing from Current Reg to New Reg aswell.
