Classic Bodywork Recommendations

Anymore luck with this @Chris tii? I was down getting my car back last night and was telling him about this and he was totally at a loss as to how it ended up at that figure for an engine bay painting.
I would recommend Him to anyone needing any welding work done, he stuck to his original quote (450-500) even though he did have to do some extra cutting and welding as is nearly always the case with rust. In total it cost me £530 for welding to rear drivers inner arch, chassis leg, filler neck panel plus a new section of front drivers chassis leg and new jacking point panel, seam sealed and stone chipped the whole underneath and filled the box sections with cavity wax. That included fitting new rear brake cylinders and brake pipes for MOT. I had bought the 2 panels already so he didn't have to fabricate those luckily but I still thought it was reasonable for the man hours involved.

Any update?
Not really. They lowered their offer a little bit but I’m not gonna pay it. It’s still way too high.

So I can either lift the car and they can take me to court and see what they can get. Or I can just leave the car there and they can hold onto it until next summer.

I would most certainly lift the car as ASAP and then let them do whatever they want. They have a very weak case legally. If you really wanted to you could pay them the agreed amount altho maybe you have already paid that and more. If you leave the car there they might sell it on to recover their loss and just say they thought you had abandoned it.

I’d lift the car too. Did they ever give an answer to why they didn’t inform you of the cost rising to 3 times the original quote or do they just plough on and think people have thousands spare in the bank.

Heard another story off someone where a customer had to get a seat and a glass of water when they found out the final bill for restoration and paint work and im talking a £11k+ Bill

Are you able to just lift the car? Surely they'd be blocking it in or would have disabled it

Can't legally do that, it's his property and withholding it is theft. A trade customer racked up quite a bill with me and this is the approach I was taking to receive payment (contracted set payment at that not like this situation). He had the audacity to get the police down and I had no choice but to hand him the keys and pursue it through court.

By not lifting the car though they are legally entitled to add storage onto the bill though so just be careful of that.

Really hope you get sorted Chris, your a nice guy and don't deserve the hassle and stress of all this.

I’d lift it too, straight away it puts you in a better position. Mentally and to do with it, let him go to court, take the car and get 5 quotes from reputable body shops for the work done. Offer him the quote money or court. I imagine 2-2500 on a bloody good day for them

Didn’t this car get a full lick of paint at AG automotive recently too?

Leaving the car for a prolonged period of time at anywhere that specialises in body repairs is inevitably going to lead to the car being dinged here there and everywhere

I personally would lift it too, if you have the option to do so.

I definitely think you are better off having the car in your possession. It means nothing can be done to the car when you have it.

I'd be quite clear about what you are doing and have some level headed friends or family with you.

Hopefully you can lift it, unfortunately I wasn't able to so with the M3, as the crook in the north west locked it away.

I agree with everything that's been said above. Go and lift your car. Make sure you leave them your full contact details, and I'd also give them a payment (electronic or cheque) for the original agreed amount.

If they want more, then let them pursue you through the courts.

Btw - do you happen to have legal cover on your house insurance. If you do, it may cover any legal costs associated with any litigation. Worth checking anyway.

Good luck

So I’ve got the car back. I collected it last week and I’ve since had it MOT’d and it’s good to have it back.
Thankfully we reached an agreement and an amount that we both are satisfied with. Obviously it was more than quoted but the thought of having to forcefully take the car and then have to go to court etc only filled me with dread. Also I’m satisfied that more work has gone into the car than first expected. So all in all I’m just glad it’s over and I can forget all about it and enjoy the car again.

I agreed not drag it all out on the forum anymore and just put it to bed. Though if anyone wants the finer details then best PM me or chat at the next cars and coffee meet. (y)

Chris,
Delighted you've managed to get your car back and reach an amicable settlement. Chalk this one down to experience I reckon.
Cheers

There may not be 6k's worth...but there's a hell of a lot of labour stripping that all down...before you even look at paint.

Given the majority is always covered anyway....would it ever be worth it ?

At least it’s concluded. I imagine they read the forum and possibly realised business harm was the only way it was going.

As you say, it’s done now and the car is back. Just put it to the back of your head and enjoy the thing. You have a belter of a car there (y).
