BMW E46 M3 SMG 255 CSL software flash, it smooths out the gear changing and it will drive a lot better.
enjoy your new smoother shifting.

Head off

IMG_4983.jpeg

Gasket was badly split between cyls 1-2 and 5-6

Started to clean the head to see if it was warped. Set a straight edge on it and it didn't appear to be but the burn marks between the faulty cyls weren't shifting, so I decided to get it surface prepped by a machinist

Set it on a head stand and started stripping it

Throttle bodies removed. Removing the valves

Throttle bodies, valves and rocker arms removed. Stripped and ready to be dropped off

Comiskies took 2 thou off it. They said it wasn't warped either. Set in an ultra sonic bath to clean it also.
The cloudiness is just condensation

Got an Elring gasket kit and set about building the head back up. I gave it a thorough blow out with the air line and it was shocking the amount of swarf that came out of it. Glad I took the valves out even though it was timing consuming.

Fitted new valve stem seals

Refitted the valves and spring sets

I managed to drop one of the valve seats into a tank I was walking past, which held up all of Easter waiting on it coming from Germany 🙄

So I started cleaning out the throttle bodies

IMG_5684.jpeg

Forgot to take an after pic so you’ll have to take my word for it 😂

Refitted them with new gaskets. Also bolted in the coolant line, replacing the gaskets along with any other gaskets and O rings I could find.

Btw if you’re doing this, fit the throttle bodies first then the coolant line! But I’d advise doing this when the head is on the car because it will make fitting the head a lot easier.

Rocker arms and shims refitted

New valve seat finally arrived allowing me to finish off the head rebuild

IMG_5779.jpeg

I sanded the deck with 5 diff grades of paper. Leaving a nice finish. Hit it with the air line and cleaned out the holes for the head bolts

IMG_5792.jpeg

MLS gasket fitted onto the dowels

IMG_5794.jpeg

Gave the head surface a final wipe

IMG_5790.jpeg

Got someone to give me a lift on with the head. Was a pig of a job

IMG_5873.jpeg

Misted the new head bolts with oil and torqued them in.
30nm + 90 degrees + 90 degrees

Good to see you're finally into something a bit more your age 😜 Never been in the E46 M3 but it's probably one of the last models I actually liked. What's the rear subframe like? Any movement? I know these like to tear themselves a new one around that area

Haha. Some argue the smg ones arnt as sore on the rear frame, seems fine but you never really know until you drop it. Starting at the front and working my way to the back 😂

Loved reading this, and fair play for getting stuck in, must be very rewarding finding the issues and sorting.
