Back then, with less grip, it was certainly more fun to watch.
Not sure if it was really that much better though. The rules were basically no holds barred, huge difference in performance between cars, to the point where drivers swapped teams mid-season to get in the best one. And people were dying almost literally every race.
For me, the Senna/Prost era was probably the best. Cars that could be raced, legendary drivers going flat out, wheel to wheel. But then there was all the politics, there was the active suspension that turned everything on its head, and so on. And safety was still way off.
Then we had the Ferrari/Schumacher era, with special Ferrari rules, unique tyres just for them, and all the rest of it.
Now we have the Merc era with superior engines, again controlled through regulations politics.
The "fairest" F1 dominance years were probably the early Lotus years with revolutionary developments in aero and chassis design. And the RB era, again with revolutionary aero.
But F1 has always been about some team gaining dominance, usually through politics (rules) or through technical innovation. It has never really been about racing as such.
I have a feeling Liberty want to change that, but they will find it hard going.
