Back then, with less grip, it was certainly more fun to watch.

Not sure if it was really that much better though. The rules were basically no holds barred, huge difference in performance between cars, to the point where drivers swapped teams mid-season to get in the best one. And people were dying almost literally every race.

For me, the Senna/Prost era was probably the best. Cars that could be raced, legendary drivers going flat out, wheel to wheel. But then there was all the politics, there was the active suspension that turned everything on its head, and so on. And safety was still way off.

Then we had the Ferrari/Schumacher era, with special Ferrari rules, unique tyres just for them, and all the rest of it.

Now we have the Merc era with superior engines, again controlled through regulations politics.

The "fairest" F1 dominance years were probably the early Lotus years with revolutionary developments in aero and chassis design. And the RB era, again with revolutionary aero.

But F1 has always been about some team gaining dominance, usually through politics (rules) or through technical innovation. It has never really been about racing as such.

I have a feeling Liberty want to change that, but they will find it hard going.

Best part of the race is the new logo.

It looks a bit like a race track if you squint a bit. Ok, squint quite a lot :joy:

Definitely better than the old one, that always looked like it was drawn by one of Bertie's grandchildren :innocent:

No that honour is reserved for Honda

Sauber is now, effectively, a Ferrari B/Junior team.

So much for them pulling out, they have increased their commitment with this move.

He’s one of a number who deserve a shot at F1. Some on the grid this year need dropped (KMag, Ericsson, Gasly, Hartley)

Agree K Mag should be dropped but Gasly & Hartley have only been in the seat a few times.
Grosjean isn’t doing much either.

Plus Grosjean seems to be an utter arsehole. Saying that his constant whining is entertaining sometimes!

I don’t see Hartley or Gasly doing anything, even with testing & a different engine. Will be racing each other next year when they are the only pair with Honda ‘power’.

Doesn’t say much for Red Bull’s current talent pool, Verstappen aside obviously.

F1 is a harsh world :grinning:

Pierre Gasly has been successful to date, he won GP2 last year (which is a much more even field) so he's no slouch. I think people find it hard to fathom the disparity in performance between the top 3 teams and even the midfield never mind those at the back. Even look how much Red Bull can be on or off the pace depending on the circuit. Basing how good a driver is on 2 or 3 races in a back of the field car is a bit silly.
Stick Leclerc into the Toro Rosso and you'll likely see the same results.

All F1 drivers are good drivers, and yes it can be hard to compare.

But the really great drivers stand out straight away. Vettel, Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, and so on. Both Vettel and Verstappen made a real impression in the TR; Hamilton went up against Alonso in the same car and nearly won when he first turned up in F1; Ricciardo went up against an imperious Vettel, didn't settle on second fiddle and drove Vettel to Ferrari; and so on.

There are exceptions. Sainz for example is one of the most under-rated drivers at the moment I think and has really picked up the batton at Renault. He took the fight to Verstappen at TR as well. Is he up there with the very best?

Not sure Wehrlein or Gasley or Hartley are quite in that league. But fair enough they have only had a couple of races.

As for K-Mag, Ericsson, Grosjean, etc. They are really only tourists, there to bring money to the teams. But that money allows the teams to then take on an untested talent, and so on, so maybe not all bad...

Second team that has overlooked Kubica now so I imagine he’s not quick enough anymore. Sirotkin is no slouch & should be better than Stroll.
