I don’t think that’s anything much to worry about, and given the age that’s pretty class. Bit of a clean up and that’ll be great.

Well there hasn't been as much progress to report on the mk2 lately. Lockdown, 2 young kids and studying to get certified for work has pretty much eaten up any spare time I would have had. With the exam now out of the way I can devote some time to get the mk2 project back underway.

I had already stripped what I needed to see what needs done but I now have got the right man on side who will be stripping car back to metal, engineering whatever fabrication it needs and then giving it a full repaint.

I have been slowly buying away at parts and put in a pretty hefty order with a typ19 specialist and have just received my first batch of parts delivered via Wolfsburg. Including a full genuine swage trims, sill decals, window scrapers, gti badges and new rear arches.

I still have a pretty big shopping list to get through but I'm happy man now there will be some real progress and will be even happier when I can get the old girl back out on the road again.

More part gathering for the rebuild.

Took a gamble with this genuine typ19 wing on ebay that arrived today. Some storage damage and dents but after taking the arch trim off all was well rust wise. Phew!

I also had the genuine new door I had ordered a few months ago from typ19.co.uk arrive today.

I also have sourced a spare axle while I get my own painted and rebuild. Ever so slowly I'm getting there.

During the past few weeks ago I got the car hot washed underneath, rear axle swapped out, tank out and lines removed for painting.

I got sometime with being off to get the dash out. Its great working on a car with this age, star head screwdriver and a socket set and the way you go. Though YouTube tutorials do come handy as I didn't think of nuts that had to come out on the bulkhead.

Hopefully the car should be going for bodywork sometime in the near distant future.

so simple and so satisfying! at least you have the space to do it. Thats some size of battery you have in it - usually an 075 in them
It's a 096, not sure if it's one for it, threw in what was closest to get it started.

Just came across this - great car and please keep it original as these are such rare early cars

85 to 87 were the best built cars for rust protection, 88and 89 cars were the worst as vw standards fell big time using a poorer metal quality but they improved for the big bumper cars but not as good as the early cars

i am currently working on a 91 mk2 16v with learning to weld from previous poor repairs to sills and i noticed rot at the bottom of the A pillars which scares me to be honest and i have been putting if off cutting out the rot in case i cant repair it

Keep up the good work

Cheers. Yeah it's going to be factory original right down to the steel wheels.

Hope to get moving again with this again very soon.

I haven't updated this thread for a long time but unfortunately I have had a horrible year. My mum was diagnosed with cancer early this year with what must be one of the cruelest cancers as it also effected her appearance. My mum after a brave but short battle passed away in June.

A few weeks later I got the nod from John that he was ready for the car. The car had obviously been the least of my concerns but it would now form a timely distraction from what I was going through.

So the race was on to get the car ready for bodywork and the car was now stripped out.

Over the next weeks as the car was stripped back a catalog of woes appeared and maybe a right thinking person would have called it quits.

The outer rear arches were poorly repaired in the past, the inner arches had fared no better.

Sections of the rear sills were passed it too, so like all the bad metal out it came.

The bottom of the A pillar was a disaster and the scuttle panel also had to come out.

And out that came and ready for fabrication.

Flip, that's a lot of work! Fair play for sticking with it.

Sorry to hear about your mum, that's just awful 😟
