There must've been something wrong with that jack, if a 2tonne jack isn't lifting a corner of a passat there's something not right..
A cheap jack is always £20 ish, £5-10 for an extendable wheel brace to have lying in the car, the extra tenner for a creeper and a couple of poor (but perfectly functional if your half sensible) stands isn't bad value.

Definitely handy for anyone doing random stuff in the driveway!

The jacks pretty piss height wise but otherwise realitively good. I have the low entry version and it won't lift my Passat high enough to fit axle stands under it without putting a big wooden block on the seat of the jack.

Aye that was the issue i think, it was working ok, just not enough height to lift the wheel without blocks or something under the jack.
