Guys thanks for all the previous advice given to try and locate the source of the leaking in my MK4 golf, but unfortunately I am still experiencing the problem and my other half is getting fed up with me trying to find the source without success :worried:

I had a chat with a guy that I know, that previously worked for VW and he checked the car and suggested the windscreen as he thinks that it looks like a replacement windscreen, I checked this and it doesn't seem to be the source

I got quoted at least £600 from VW to sort the problem :sob:

Is there anyone that knows this problem with MK4 Golfs that would be able to to fix it for me for a reasonable price??? I would really like to get it fixed as soon as possible. Thanks guys

Havent seen the other thread, but have you checked the bonnet pull grommet?

Mine is currently leaking under the windscreen surround so Ill be sorting that soon enough.

Which side is it leaking?

Inner door seals ;)

Take off the door cards, unbolt the metal inner door skin, which holds the window motor/regulator etc.

Theres a gasket round this that perishes, water gets down the inside of the door, seaps out the perished gasket (instead of being blocked and directed on down to the drain holes) and gets trapped between the door and the door seal running along the sill.

It then fills up the gap and over flows the door seal and seaps into the carpet. (Next time its been raining for a while, have a look when you open the doors, if this is the cause of your leak you should see the door seals/sills are wet. I literally get a splash of water when i open my drivers door!)

With the innner panel unbolted, remove the lower portion of the gasket (along the bottom and maybe 6-8" up either side), give the area a good scrub with a stiff brush, wipe down with meths and dry.

Run a healthy bead of Silicone (or similar) a along where the gasket used to be. Screw the inner panel back on and you should have it sorted

Mines leaks in the drivers side footwell and Ive narrowed it down to a hole behind the windscreen covers. Dont know if the golf has them though.

Any staining on the a pillar?

The inner door seals, drain within the door sills, etc... were mentioned before, I cleaned the drains as there was dirt in them as suggested, but the issue still occurs

I think it may be the door seals as the last time I checked for water traces after recent rain, there seemed to be some water sitting on the door footsills of the driver's door and passenger door behind the driver seat

when I checked the door footsills on the other side of the car they were dry - does this clarify that it is the doorseals??

Is there anyone that could confirm and fix this for me for a reasonable price?

Thats the inner door seal leak perfectly described! You need to re-seal the Bottom section of the window mechanism carrier plate that bolts to the inside of the door.

Half an hour and a drop of silicone and its sorted. Only tools you need should be a T20 Torx bit, Star head screwdriver, 10mm socket/spanner and something to prise the trim off around the door handle etc (a bread knife makes a decent trim removal tool :grinning: )

Would you be confident in doing this on the Golf if I paid you buff?

both footwells screams heater matrix to me.

How can you tell if it is the heater matrix Pablo? Where is it located?

Is there anyone who specialises in fixing problems with Golfs leaking - it's doing my head in LOL!

usually in the middle in behind the radio etc.

if its leaking on both sides then it must be coming from above due to the tunnel in the middle to the gearstick. to me that rules out door seals and sunroof as these would be more the edges than the middle.

its all guesswork tho.

No Pablo it only appears to be leaking in the drivers side footwell and the passenger footwell behind the drivers seat on the right hand side

pollen filter being dirty can cause a small leak sumtimes, we find this when we're changing the windscreen!

Yeah I checked this out - it was changed a few months back and has no wet areas on it, so the hunt continues

You have your choise of the door seals, as previously mentioned, the pollen filter housing seal or the relay box cover seal!! They are all known faults with the mk4, but i'd say more than likely its your doors!! FYI, if your going to do this use a good quality silicone, i had some plonker that sealed a door on a car that came into work with windscreen bonding!!!!! its not fun when the door lock has to be replaced after it!!

check the water drain holes on the bottom of your doors, clean them out and see how it does for you then. seats have the same problem, the drain holes are too small an get blocked then water overflows into the footwells. hopefully that will be wats wrong with yours and will keep u an the missuss from getin ur feet wet.

Whole driver side in mine was the same, which I eventually fixed using Buffs method and bingo, no more water or steamed up windows. I decided to fix it in winter as i came out one morning to a sheet of ice inside the windscreen!! Just on this subject i noticed the other day that the windows are steaming up again, low and behold the other side is gone so gonna have to tackle it this weekend. If you do it i would suggest you do both doors while you are at it.

I know nothing about cars and I managed it easy enough, though my window now rattles slightly when it's part down, therefore i wouldn't do anyone elses car. I used this guide from SeatCupra.net:

Water leak into footwell - dodgy seal info and DIY repair guide - SEAT Cupra.net - SEAT Forum

I`ve seen this a couple of times and it always seemed to be the seal around the pollen filter
