Yeah actually I'm aware of them - The only reason I've heard of them is because my mate who lives in that direction used to drive by them in his A3 and thought he'd leave it in for some work. Can't remember the details but I just remember him saying they were a nightmare to deal with and fecked him around alot. I must ask him what exactly happened.

It does not "appear" to be a belt..... It IS a belt. Pretty reliable wee engine I actually own 2 of these and one with high miles, never gave a tap of bother! (yet! Lol)

... and take mountains of abuse and only be serviced every 50,000 miles without issues ;)

I went to see this yesterday, it was a pretty grim and embarrassing experience (for the seller). Firstly I will say the car seems pretty decent, couldn't fault it, looks and drives well. I would have been interested but the guy was just so unsure of what he was selling.
First he priced it incorrectly in the ad, so that changed, then he said it was £30 tax when it's actually something like £110, then he still insisted it was a timing chain despite me pointing out all the above info. He had to ring his mechanic while I was standing there to be told he was wrong. It was advertised as doing 60mpg (correct according to parkers) - overnight he must have been doing some serious remapping as when I arrived yesterday he was fit to tell me it does over 70mpg.

Despite all of the above BS I could see with my own two eyes that it was a decent car and was still interested despite his lack of knowledge. The killer blow came when we got talking about trading my wife's car in and despite already quoting a maximum and minimum price for this on the phone (depending on him seeing the car of course), he completely low-balled me way below the minimum - The car wants for nothing but a good valet and he found nothing wrong with it.

I've just lost all interest in this one, I think I'll sell privately and proceed from there!

Go on who was it?

The seller? some lad on gumtree who works from the house - I'm not going to name names or give out his address - but the ad above is still live.
To be fair he's a nice enough lad, just comes across inexperienced.

So, I ended up buying this after all that nonsense! I had left him with the absolute minimum figure I would take for my wife's car and he was having none of it so I walked away. Four days later I get a text message and the deal is on! Thanks for all the responses

Thoughts and experiences on these engines?

Found a car with this engine that I may consider buying as a run around for a while

Has 96k on it, Skoda Fabia Sport 2008

Ha . Thread revival. So I bought that car at the time. Ran it for a couple of years and punted it on after shed loads of trouble shooting.
I can't emphasize how crap they are.
I hoped for good economy and reliability and got neither. You have to work the 3 cylinders hard. Lots of electrical issues.
When driving round town there's never a "right gear " to be in . It's either laboured or you're revving the balls off it .
I now have my wife in V8 Jeep. She's much happier. Get a V8

Fat nope then
It was one of those moments where we said let's get a wee economy car ... Thought it was clever but naaaa.
Despite the electrical gremlins it's just not a great thing to live with.... If it's economy you want then a small engine petrol makes more sense . It will be easier to live with .
Other than that. If it has to be diesel then just get a decent 4 vag cylinder.
Also consider a V8.
