Immobiliser question

I'm looking at my insurance renewal and noticed the following

"Immobiliser must be fitted for Theft cover to apply. We will not provide any cover under Section 2 of the policy (ie. any claim for loss of damage by Theft or attempted Theft of the Insured Car) unless we have proof that: it is fitted with an Insurance approved immobiliser or immobiliser alarm fitted by the manufactures or insurance approved installer and the immobiliser or immobiliser alarm is on and working whenever the Insured Car is left"

The part that concerns me is the last bit "immobiliser alarm is on and working whenever the Insured Car is left". If anything was to happen how would I prove this? @Tony@Greenlight

All UK cars from around the early 90's had factory fit immobilisers. Most key/chip/transponder nonsense. So effectively they are always working when the car is left

Cheers @stevieturbo car is a 2004 import and does not have an immobiliser - One has been fitted as an aftermarket device and I have a certificate from the installer (Cobra Thatcham approved).

Just wondering how I prove that it was set whenever the car is left - shall they accept my word for it as long as I have the certificate?

I hope this is never an issue its just because it was an import and its an aftermarket certified immobiliser I was concerned

You'd need to get written confirmation from your own broker/company on what they agree and will accept. Obviously when the car is locked the immobiliser will be active, so all you can do is ensure it's locked when not in use.

Again most immobiliser simply activate when the car is turned off, or turned off and left for a period of time. Find out what make/model it is and it should tell you.

Dont forget, an immobiliser can be a separate item from the alarm...which are separate from the locks, which can be separate from an alarm.

Yes they are usually all integrated, but they dont have to be. So you could be locking doors...but not activating an immobiliser. Or you could turn an alarm on...but not lock the doors etc.

It just depends what is installed and how it is installed.

or it could be a Clifford and **** all would work except the bloody siren which would go off entirely at random just to annoy everyone.

Instead of making a new thread I’m going to post here

Would a key cutter/specialist like Timpsons be able to tell me if the key has a chip/transponder therefore having an immobiliser?
Having a nightmare with the insurance company being very difficult with everything at the minute

Edit: It’s an older import and not the original key by the way

What car/age ? post a pic of the key ?

I think it was from like 1992 onwards or something all cars had to have a factory immobiliser, but as you say import that's a grey area. Whether that was a chip type key or bleepy button etc not sure.

Usually a fairly bulky headed key will have a transponder chip in it though.

didn’t think of searching up about the key went looking for a photo and found out it doesn’t have a chip in it.

looks like the first task is an immobiliser in it then. @Nicky seen you were looking to get one done while ago did you get sorted?

Is @OLLIeCrX still active on here? He changed the alarm/immobiliser system in my Scooby when I bought I as I was have issues with radio lockout (apparently the police now use the frequency that my alarm did so I couldn't open/lock/start the car). I'm sure he could sort you out, he was Bangor based then (approx 7 years ago).

Anyone a contact number for him or someone similar who can be trusted and will give me some sort of certificate jobbie for it? Belfast direction
