Mechanic to Replace Turbo?

stevie at turboshack knows his stuff and is not normally far away with his prices and he will have to give a warranty whether you want it or not. when he says 3/4 days work he probably means he needs that time to get the car done. how much have you already spent getting a diagnosis at the main dealers when stevie told you the problem for free.

Actually Stevie didn't tell me for free. I told him that I "think" my turbo is knackered and asked for a quote, so he quoted me and said it is probably a pin or something in the turbo itself.

I called Mazda and they told me that the most likely issue is a split pipe which is a known issue and they would at least he able to diagnose it easily, so I took a chance and they confirmed the turbo was knackered. I had hoped that they might contribute something towards the repair considering my car has an excellent dealer service history but unfortunately not. They charged me £90 for the diagnosis.

I have no reason whatsoever to doubt this is the time it takes and he gets an excellent rep, however I don't have £1,200 to spare right now.

A friend of mine recommend a place on eBay who sell reconditioned turbos and also a guy who is apparently a Mazda specialist near Ballymena. I spoke with him and he said he'd swap out the turbo for around £250. The recon turbo was £500. It's booked in to be replaced early March. I'll update here out of interest on how it goes.

Don’t forget to service the car again, (regardless if you had it serviced recently) and make sure the pipes aren’t blocked or you’ll end up doing it twice as there was reason the turbo failed and that needs found first. Oil starvation etc.

I’ve used Steve when at Autotune and also in turbo shake and he doesn’t rip the arse out of price. He is always fair and does A1 job.

Actually that's a good point you make. I did have trouble with low oil pressure last year. It was finally fixed properly around October time. The strainer and oil downpipes were replaced. I've been keeping a close eye on the oil pressure since (using Forscan) and it has been perfect. It is right within manufacturer spec.

I suspect that the damage to the turbo was probably already done and this was probably the cause. I recall the odd time when the turbo would stop responding but this seemed to co-inside with a DPF regen, so I assumed this was the cause.

I will speak to the mechanic about a service, but I have to be honest and say I'm a bit reluctant to flush out the engine oil again with it being only a few weeks old and barely any miles done. If there's a good reason to do it then I might just do it anyway.

I am considering selling the car on soon anyway but even if I do, I certainly won't be selling it in a poor state. I don't have the conscience do do that.

@Nicky i think worked at A turbo place and always said do and oil change with turbo change. Could be wrong Nicky tho.

depends on mode/cause of failure.

But an oil change at the same time etc makes sense regardless.

If it has failed in such a way that debris might be in the pipes, intercooler etc etc...that can be a huge cleaning operation.

good practice to replace turbo oil feed pipes, clean and flush as best you can with any other pipes, change oil and filter and prime the turbo for first start up.

Thanks. It's a bit annoying considering it was only replaced a few weeks ago and I'm sure I've done well less than 100 miles since. But it's not worth the risk to avoid changing it.

Any time I’ve done a turbo change it’s just standard procedure to change oil, filter and usually oil feed pipe also if it’s at all worn or it expensive. Thing is I’ve bought reconned turbos in the past and part of the warranty is to change the oil not sure if that’s the case now adays as been a while from I’ve put one on. Bit annoying but sure these things happens and at least your getting it sorted

The oil feed pipe was replaced in October 2021 so hopefully I'll not need to replace it again.

I think its more annoying because a stupidly paid a fortune for the service at Mazda and I think they charged something like 60 quid plus VAT for the oil only a few weeks ago.

i know a main dealer who charges £11 +vat per litre and it is the same oil as we use and costs £2.71 per litre when bought in 45-gallon drums.

Aye it's crazy. They seem to make a point of it being 'low ash' oil which is seemingly more expensive, but the service manual states that any 0w-30 or 5w-30 oil will do.

Work had one as company car way back. Consistently dpf issues, pickup, strainer, turbo issues before eventually grenading itself. You just need to Google 2.2 diesel mazda and the Internet breaks

Was this maybe the previous gen diesels? I've done a lot of searches and only found one case of an engine failure. Most of the issues relate to air leaking into the injectors causing the oil to harden over time which if left untreated, could be serious.

I should be past these problems now. I suspect the seals were changed at some point but I will ask the mechanic to check them again when he fits the turbo.

It's silly that something as simple as injector seals can cause such serious issues!
