Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic or garage near Belfast/Templepatrick direction preferably who can replace the turbo on my car? It's a Mazda 6 2.2 Skyactive diesel. I can get a professionally refurbished turbo for about £500, so just looking for a competent mechanic to carry out the work and maybe get a rough idea of how many hours labour.

Appreciate the help. Thank you!

Stevie Lynn, he owns 1 Stop Motor Shop in Mallusk. He's a great lad highly recommend him!
Thanks! That's very close to me, so would be ideal. Hopefully he's reasonably priced too :grinning:

Volvo's!
A good guesstimate would be in the £500 ball park. Turbo refurb was £150 I think, plus labour and gaskets. Depending what happened to the turbo the intake pipes may need cleaned or even replaced, plus an oil change, maybe even sump off and clean.
Car I done was an Octavia and they are known for sludge and blocking oil ways, so for me it was a sump off and was the exhaust side that failed to no pipes to clean. Total to my customer was £350 all in

Thanks. That's really helpful. It's the smaller turbo that's the issue and there's a faint whistling. Once I hit 2,500 revs, the big turbob takes over and the car is fine. I had a mechanic have a quick look at it and he said it'll need replaced/repaired.

I would prefer a turbo specialist because I'm also not 100% certain that the turbo I'd be buying would be the correct part. My car was just serviced a few weeks ago by Mazda at nearly £300, so hopefully I won't have to drain the oil which is pretty new. A sidenote, the service cost nearly £300 and they didn't replace the air filter? It was supposed to be a major service, so it's puzzling why they didn't do this. I digress haha.

This would save a bit of hassle. I get in contact with this guy. Many thanks!

Just to clarify, I done the work, was only the turbo I had done by turboshak.

Sad thing about the motor trade its hard to find an honest mechanic. £300 for a service is mental! I don't know an awful lot about the 2.2 Mazda, am actually surprised it's a twin turbo!

The Volvo bi turbo has a flap which switches between the 2 turbos and that flap if not adjusted properly allows the pressure from the small turbo down to the big turbo instead of to the engine. Very easily adjusted so may be worth finding a Mazda specialist before committing to a new turbo. Turboshak may even have good experience and could advise also.

The 2.2 Mondeo is a Peugeot HDi, I assume the Mazda would be the same lump, again, no experience so would take that as gospel!

Hope you get it sorted!

Thanks! The Mazda turbo works exactly the same way as you described. It's a Mazda built Skyactive engine, so not that HDi engine as far as I know. I'll see what they say and go from there. Thank you!

Part of the problem is people's....and garages perception of what a "service" actually is.

A proper service should cover a hell of a lot more than what many dealers would even consider doing, and is certainly not just changing a filter or washing the vehicle.
So in a lot of respects, a full and proper service...ie parts, replacement and inspections could easily be £300 or more. Recent parts alone I bought for mine were around £250. SO no chance in hell would a full service with labour be under £300 or even near it in this instance. But as a lot of people have got somehow used to a "service" being an oil/filter change if they're lucky and only being charged a small sum......the whole thing is ****ed up.

Yet another example....I bought my current car in September, 67k, supposed to be full dealer service history with it ( electronic bull**** ). I started changing some bits myself last week, and the car had the factory original air filter, dated 2015 the same year it was made.
Bizarrely the cabin filter was dated 2019.....so someone had changed it, but not the air filter.

Haven't got around to the other bits, too fecking cold.

In terms of the turbo.....whoever you use, get them to do the entire job.....if you supply the turbo and something goes wrong, you'll have zero warranty all round.

Thanks. Some wise words there! I never thought of the warranty situation. What you say makes perfect sense.

I looked at the invoice and they changed everything else but the air filter which I really don't get. It's a 1 minute job and costs less than a tenner. Baffling. A very kind member of this forum gave me a K&N air filter which for some reason I haven't fitted yet. I'll throw that in. I hear it's much better than the standard ones anyway.

Paid just a tad more than @NI_Volvo_Nut but they removed a dump valve and fitted a standard recirc valve for me and reworked the hoses. Give them a call and they will keep you right.
Nice one cheers. I've sent them a message. Don't want to bother them over the weekend. I'll definitely call them on Monday.

I think I'll get in touch with them for general car maintenance and servicing etc. I've been looking for a good reliable garage near me and haven't really found one yet. Thanks again 👍

I spoke to Stevie at Turboshack this morning. He explained that there is a pin or something that activates a flap between the two turbos and this has probably broken. He said it would be 3-4 days work and would cost around £1,200 8o|. It's obviously very labour intensive work.

I spoke to the Mazda dealer, who have been great with me in the past to be fair. They said that it is apparently common for the turbo pipe to fail on these, but they don't often see complete turbo failures. It will still be 6 hours labour or so, but I guess that will still be a lot less than if the turbo needs replaced or repaired. They said it will be easy for them to diagnose, so I've booked it in with them for the diagnoses later this week. I will decide what to do next based on the diagnosis.

I just got a call from Mazda and they confirmed that the turbo is knackered. It needs replaced. They quote me nearly £3,000 :sob:

I spoke with Stevie at 1 Stop Motor Shop in Mallusk about replacing it with a supplied refurbished unit and he said that Turboshack do all their work, but I very much doubt they will want to fit a refurb. They will want to repair it themselves which I totally understand.

Are there any other mechanics you would recommend that could carry out just the replacement if I supplied the refurb? I appreciate that any warranty won't cover the labour, but it's likely I'll be looking to sell the car on in the coming months, so want to keep repair costs to a minimum if possible. Thank you!

stevie at turboshack knows his stuff and is not normally far away with his prices and he will have to give a warranty whether you want it or not. when he says 3/4 days work he probably means he needs that time to get the car done. how much have you already spent getting a diagnosis at the main dealers when stevie told you the problem for free.
