Mini Cooper losing power??

Hi all. Anyone have any idea why our 1.6 Cooper would be losing power? You can drive along grand at 70 then all of a sudden it will sudder and drop revs. Turn it on and off and its grand for 5mins, then it happens all over again. Doesnt seem to want to take a rev.

I thought filter but bmw say they have a lifetime filter in them and it would not be it. Pump? Car was only serviced 3weeks ago, plugs, oil, air/oil filter.

Thanks, Ryan.

Nothing buddy. Not even a warning light on the dash. I got a system check done on it and it has no faults. Been searching on the mini forum for quite some time unable to find an answer of some sort.

The car is not going into limp mode, it merely starts to chug, lift the foot off the pedal and ease it on again the car will drive fine again untill revs increase. Could be bad fuel. Mechanic is draining the tank tonight to check.

Know this may be a bit extreme but if you find that it is not the fuel and there are no fault codes I would suggest that someone with a programme to monitor and a laptop is plugged in to see what exactly is happening. It could be spark, maf, fuel or even an ecu fault:relieved:

Or take it to a garage with a rolling road to replicate what is happening :-#

Thats a good idea Mic, thank you. We will eliminate the simples first. One way or another it has to be fixed. It most of sensed we are changing it in the summer and decided after 3 and a bit years of trouble free motoring to spit the dummy out lol.

Judging by what your saying I would definatley think its the MAF sensor. Odd its not showing any fault codes though im sure BMW were happy enough to charge you an arm for it too :worried:

Hope its sorted soon (y)

Lucky enough my mechanic also a close friend just spent a good few grand on a snap on diagnostic computer. He has spoken to the foreman of JKC Coleraine who has never dealt with the problem before. Im sure we will get the problem, its nothing major he is confident of that its just a bit of a pig when you want to go past 60!

I'd put money on MAF - had same problem on an old E46. May be worth seeing if you can borrow one for a few mins and try a run out the road with it.

My mechanic removed the sensor and cleaned it, put it back in and it went perfect for 5mins. So he removed it again cleaned it again this time cleaner the throttle body, built it back up and no change. Fuel pump and filter being ordered tomorrow but i will ask him to see if he knows anyone i can borrow one off.

Thanks guys!

mini's have a problem with the throttle body, well sometimes on these! they not only need cleaned, but need recalibrated also as they lose there settings /go out of sync with the ecu!

the likes of maf's etc as listed above fail commonly on them, as do idle control valves

another common and well documented fault in them that causes this fault moreso than most is not engine related at all! the powersteering electrics and or pump cuts out on them, some times leading onto further electrical power loss and or failure, ie loses power when driving
we have had one customer call into where i work complaining of this, and the time it took her to walk from her car to our reception, and back to her car there was smoke from under the bonnet, the power steering pump had caught fire!!!!

The strange thing is why is it showing no faults on the computer or putting any of the warning lights up on the dash. Having removed the feul filter last night my mechanic told me it was pretty bad which still makes him think its pump related. I got a number for a specialist in England and will give him a try. Jkc have never dealt with this type of problem before, or so they say.

Small update. My mechanic plugged his computer into the car and got a fuel pressure reading when the car was driving good, once it started to run bad the fuel pressure was almost nothing. New pump and filter £250+vat may sort it. Just have to wait until monday for the parts. Removed Filter was also in very bad condition.

Nope, came up with nothing. AFAIK a faulty MAF rarely throws up a CEL.

Good you have some idea what it is anyway!

Another update as it may prove handy for someone in the future. My mechanic got the new fuel pump and filter fitted. Filled the car to the brim with petrol and put about 25mile on the clock over two days and it seems to have sorted it. All up it cost £400. Wasnt bad at all, i just need my better half to understand that the petrol doesnt just appear in the tank you actually have to put it in there lol..

MiniCooper losing power.

I have a similar problem. I have a 2002 Mini S. The first time out of the garage i.e. cold engine, when accelerating up through 50 mph the engine power drops off completely. No throttle response or throttle pressure. Cycling the ignition restores power. This has happened 5 times in the last 3-4 months. No fault codes. This seems to happen while accelerating up hill but this may not be significant.
Any thoughts?

Hi
I know it's a long time ago but I am having the same problems with my mini that I recently bought. Loss of power (especially uphill) I keep having to put it back into first and pump the accelerator pedal. 5 minutes later it does again. Often it will splutter along then kick into action. What was the outcome of yours?
