I've always wanted to own a Mk 2 and never seemed to get round to it until now. I had been looking over the last year or so online and asking around but to no avail. I put a bit more effort into it and went to view a couple and just found disappointment each time.

Then by chance i found a guy that had a quite a few shells about him and i went up and picked the most solid one he had. The shell is pretty much solid throughout except for a couple of bits on the passenger inner guard. So i got the deal done and got it home.

There wasn't much with the shell except the 2 doors which is good considering they are £500 a piece now second hand.

My intention at that start was to build a road car with a S2000 or similar engine and box, Arch it out and put a safety devices bolt in cage in it. As a few weeks passed i started to change my mind and was thinking of going down the group 4 rally car route.

So currently the plan is to get the shell group 4 welded & arched and i have acquired a 2 litre full steel vauxhall engine with Jenvys, dry sump & MBE Ecu all ready to go. Should be somewhere in the region of 270 - 280bhp. Should be fun if not a little noisy.

I had the guys down that will be doing the welding and agreed a spec & price so will get that done in the next few months.

Doesnt look like much now but i know how it will look when finished and I'm looking forward to each part of the build. It will be expensive and take a few years. I am hoping 3 - 4 years will have it on the road.

Pic of the car as is currently.

LOL genuinely shocked at how clean the shell is, looks a great find.

I'm really pleased with the shell. It really is mint underneath. No rot anywhere. Everything is where it is meant to be. Some one had stared to work on the shell and give up. With the group 4 gear being welded on to it there wont be much of the original shell left lol.

Dont even want to guess what you had to pay. Engine choice is a good idea will sound alot more period correct, somehow the S2000, albeit a great engine, just wouldnt look or sound right lol

I think its great that you have started the thread at this early stage so you can document and we can follow the progress. I look forward to the updates.
Now that huge garage makes perfect sense ! :grinning:

Awesome :grinning:

What route you going down with the interior? Always thought the arched cars need the full cage etc to look right inside.

Yes its going for the full group 4 shell treatment which includes the weld in cage. Interior will be two seats, a gearstick and a handbrake. apart from that some carbon door covers and thats about it

I sourced a Type 9 ford sierra gearbox. Im going to have it stripped down by Gardiner's and fit the 3J Driveline Ford Sierra Type 9 Helical Gearkit from Montgomery Motorsport so that it can handle the power from the engine. Also have to buy the ford to vauxhall adapter bell housing.
