I’ve been restoring my Mk1 Golf GTi for the past 6 years. It’s practically finished, but I can’t get the car to run. Is there anyone you can recommend who knows these cars inside out to find out what’s wrong as I’ve been at it for weeks now with no success. I feel like I’m going round in circles now and it’s time to get expert help.
I’m close to Belfast, obviously prefer someone who could come to me as car is not driveable.

Many thanks in advance

They’re straight forward. What are the symptoms?

I had a Mk2 8v that wouldn’t run. Kept going off cylinders, running really rich & flooding. It was a cold temp sensor. Cheap and easy fix

Davey @ sandown would defo be the person if you are looking for someone to look at it but you would need to get the car to him.

When you say you cant get it running. No fuel, no spark? Or what is happening

Its kjet so it's a pretty simple setup and easy to pinpoint issues, same with distributor/timing etc

So after reading the 6 pages the current situation is that it's now trying to start, might occasionally fire, but turn just dies?

You measured/checked injectors flow on cranking all good
You tested for spark all good
You checked/rechecked timing marks all good

It doesnt seem like you are that far off

I've a 16v and it's running a tweaked WUR - I have to run my car with the csv disconnected, it will not start, run or idle with it connected due to the increased fueling from the WUR.

I'd also be inclined to pull the idle screw our past the o-ring and let it suck air while cranking that way you can see is it a mixture issue

Also disconnect the idle valve, go back to basics on it so that its only fuel, spark and your foot controlling the throttle/rpm/air

Cheers for the advice everyone. The earth is good, was one of the first things I checked.

I’ll have a bit more of a tinker over the weekend using your advice Gambit.

Assume you have the long enough allen key to adjust the mixture at metering head also?

If you need spares for checking things I've everything from the lift pump in tank to fuel injector and everything in between kjet related 😀

Sorted lads, she’s running. Did a few more checks, definitely had spark & fuel, fully wound out the idle screw and wound out the mixture screw fully then back in a couple of turns. I knew by the massive back fire through the inlet manifold that the timing couldn’t be right so tweaked the dizzy until she fired first turn of the key but was clearly just running on the 5th injector. Tweaked the mixture screw in by half a turn each time until she fired up and idled.
Got the timing light on her and set properly, then let her warm up.
Thanks for all the help, now for a few shows!!

Cheers for the comments guys. The first pic is before I totally stripped the underside & engine bay. Once I’ve got her detailed again I’ll get some final pics up. It’s my pride and joy, I’ve owned her since 2000.

Thanks Jim, I had the resto thread on the gtini forum but that’s all lost now which is a real shame. It’s all on the Mk1 owners forum now.
