Mk6 GTI Timing Chain Replacement

Hey,

I’ve been trying to find a mechanic that’s willing to do the timing chain/tensioner replacement on my mk6 gti.

Having tried multiple I either get ignored or told they can’t do it (fair enough). Are there any Volkswagen specialists or mechanics who know these engines that you can recommend? I don’t mind travelling.

I’m in the Armagh area.

Thanks

andy.

I don’t know about Armagh but I had mine done by a local mechanic and friend of mine.

SC Motors in Bangor, the only problem is he is probably booked solid and is currently in the Isle of Man on holiday. If you’re interested give him a call +44 7715 951135.

Hopefully you can get someone closer to home but at least now you have an option.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I’ll see what else people come up with. I could well be giving him a call. Happy to travel if I know the job is done right :grinning:

Is there any other preventative maintenance worth doing while down as far as the chain replacement?

Might as well pull the oil strainer and give it a clean/inspection while in that far. That’s about it really though. It’s a shame they have the tensioner issue as it puts a lot of people off them.

I’ve had a chain replacement on my wife’s mini countryman done by Lee at LT Automotive beside Newbuildings MOT centre before and he has my GTI sitting waiting to work on it with a snapped chain, but he’s maybe a tad too far for you

ASR - Audi Specialist Repairs in Lurgan would be worth a shout I imagine!

Pretty sure @Tufty can vouch for them.

Andy Maxwell at The Forge Garage out by Moneyreagh direction would get my vote and as said above - oil strainer and sump drop for peace of mind.

I’d take it to Andy also. He fitted my LSD into a replacement gearbox on my mk5 which can’t be a small job.

Andy gets my vote too. He has maintained my VW/Skoda cars for more than a decade and he is a genius when it comes to German cars!!

Bit far out for you but I know DR Automotive (Newtownards) did the chain replacement on a friend's MK4 R32 within the last year. Engine out job on his car.
