Motability Car

Been asked to help my FIL pick out a motability car for first time. Never dealt with motability before, neither has he.

Anyone have any advice on the process or better still any obvious choices for the car? Thinking maybe a crossover kind of thing as they could use the extra space but literally 5 seats and non electric are the only requirements for now (he parks on the street).

Thanks

Go to the motability website, filter what you are looking for then literally google "(Make) Motability" and you'll see their up to date price list with a few more options. Loads of cars with no up front costs. Then visit the dealer, bring your FIL's paperwork and award letter, order the car and that's it.

Or just go around the dealers if you can be arsed. Their prices aren't any better than what's shown online.

My mums had a motability car for years, she's just ordered a new Puma ST Line.

I think the likes of Hyundai are hard bate, VW/Skoda/Seat etc - I would have a look for small/med/large suv filters on the website and have a look - The new Kona hybrids are class, but warrant about £1500 upfront or so. (£750 is paid for by motability themselves so knock that off any advance payments.)
Boucher would be handy could test drive a few of the different brands VW/BMW/Merc/Volvo/Skoda/Seat/Honda etc - make a day out of it lol - although obviously most of the VW stuff will be much the same to actually drive

Volvo's!
Parents have very good experience with SERE on Boucher Rd. Other than that, look for low deposit stuff as you effectively rent the car, so whatever money you throw at it is lost

My Gran has had a wee Ioniq the last two times, which led to me buying one!

This time she's went for an MG4 (free charger included)

Cheers all good advice, I had thought you went through motability directly and their listing of cars on their website isn't the best.

@Rocko I think the Puma would be a great size for him but aren't those 1.0 eco boosts problematic?

Has anyone ordered recently? Is there still a huge lead time as seen with new car orders?

@PaddyCvr @StephenMcC An EV/Hybrid would be ideal for them as they only drive a few miles a day but they park on street so charging would be the problem

Even if it is, they'll have a courtesy car waiting if there's any problems. My mum ordered a few weeks ago, told there's hopefully a stock order somewhere otherwise it could be a bit of a wait.

Great news
I think they sorted the eco boost problems out.

My parents car is an eco sport140bhp eco boost and it’s not needed anything in 60k miles.

As others have said, the motability website is the best place to start. It allows you to filter your needs based on fuel type, transmission, number of doors or seats, down payment amount, type of PIP awarded, monthly payments (taken from PIP award) etc……

It’s not that good at giving you pics of the car and what not, but once you’ve your choices narrowed down you can then visit a local dealers website to get better pics and info as well as who to contact at said dealers to get the car.

Most dealers have a Motability specialist on site.

Some dealers and Motability themselves have special offers such as reduced down payments or cash back when returning a previous Motability vehicle, but in my experience you’ll only find that out from the dealer.

You will need to bring any documentation with you such as proof of PIP award and a drivers licence for the driver(s) (I think you can have up to 3 on the “policy”) when you order the car.

The person awarded the PIP will be sent out a “PIN Number” by post which will be required on collection of the car.

As I’ve touched on, payment for the car is taken from the PIP payment automatically each month, leaving the person the remainder (if applicable).

Everything is covered except for fuelling obviously. So that’s servicing, tyres and breakdowns. Now there are certain exceptions eg: if they deem you to be doing burnouts etc on the tyres, and anything that they may deem to be over and above fair wear and tear.

Insurance excess for any accidental damage is typically £100 regardless of fault, albeit if you’re not at fault and have someone else admitting liability that can be sorted via their insurance as per normal.

We went for a Hyundai i20 N Line which we picked up at the tail end of January and think it’s a fantastic car. They let us test drive a Bayon (which is a type of small crossover) which basically had the same equipment more or less and it seemed like a good car, just wasn’t to our tastes.

Apologies for the long winded reply, just trying to give as much info as I can.

By all means PM me if you have anything else you’d like to ask and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Cheer’s @Cro

Regarding motability, they are fantastic to work with.
My wife has been in a car from 2004 until 2022.
Due to unfortunate circumstances the agreement ended in 2022, but they were great with me.

Without doubt I'll be dealing with them in the future, but it'll be a much different requirement sadly.

Call them if you've any issues or things to discuss.

I have a direct number for you to save a little hassle.

Can't go wrong with a hybrid - don't have to plug them in and do return very good mpg around town. A family member ordered a Kona there and it's about a 4/5 month wait. My mums looking at ordering one (not mutability) too and roughly the same amount of lead time - have a ring about - a lot of the dealers used to have stock of the more popular special offers from what I've been told previously
