Been making the mid sill and lower wheel arch panel today. Takes soo long and I really should get myself a shrinker / stretcher or just a lot more practice.

Also trying to get a bit of extra room in the boot as I've been using 195/55 tyres and have bought some chunky tyres for some gravel events later in the year. I didn't fancy unpicking the work I did on the rear panel last year so I decided to take an inch or so out of the front end of the boot floor. I've figured out that should be enough but I don't get my hands on the tyres until this week coming so I'll not close this up until I put a tape measure across them. One of the current 195/55 R1Rs fits in ok though. I might need to create a bit more space for the upper spare but I'll see when I've got the tyres beside me.

Got a good run at the new inner wheel arch panel and the middle sill section so I can hopefully get the rear quarter section on tomorrow.

Quite a few flies in the spray booth today.

Then a while on getting the outer quarter section trimmed. Took me a while to figure out how to do it properly because I only have one shot at it.

Should get back at it on Monday and get on with getting it final fitted and welded.

I know. Pain in the rear end. Not for much longer though, got a couple of report to close out and that's me done for a couple of months.

Getting on with the boot mod so I can get back to the quarter. Got the panel welded in, ground back, some zinc primer and seam sealer on it. Once that goes off, I'll see what silver paint is in the cupboard and throw some at it.

Back to trimming and prepping the quarter panel section. No pressure, it was only 85 quid for the complete panel even though I'm not using it all.

Looking better now, still a fair bit of detail fettling to do and drill the holes for plug welding the edges. Might get back out at it for an hour now seeing as there's not much on tv....

Great work. @cauld1 has a great setup (if a little rash :p) in his MX-5 boot for holding two spare wheels. Boot floor panel was cut and a dished panel welded in to allow both wheels to sit vertically rather than horizontally as with the stock arrangement. Ask him nicely and he may send a photo for reference

Only thing is I run 14s, and have most of the boot lid cut and binned! Frig I need to get out and do an event or 2 again, been a long time

@johna3 Yeah but I'd need a different exhaust for that and I'm not binning the lovely exhaust that @PeteMoore made for it. There is a lot less room in the MK1 boot in any case so I'm not sure the 15's I have would fit in there at all.

@cauld1 yes, you should get out again. I'm missing quite a few events at the moment due to getting the car sorted for this welsh event at the end of the month. I see lots of late nights ahead!! Hoping to do a lot more towards the end of the year. I brought back a car load of tyres for the 'winter' events and some proper agressive gravel tyres for the welsh one. ;)

Back at this today after a couple of days of paying work. Just did the final trim and started to get the plug welds along the bottom and tack the butt joints into place. Slow going as I didn't want to put too much heat into it and warp the panel. I had to put a pair of front shocks into my daughter's car so that gave me something to do while the panel was cooling between passes. Still got a bit to do and get it tidied up but happy with the lack of warpage so far.

Been a busy week but I'm on the boat in the morning. (y)
20180723_123738.jpg

Opened up the sill on the other side as the outer panel was breaking out and looking like a major issue waiting to happen. Really it was only the outer panel as the inner was solid and cleaned up very well. I banged on a new outer repair panel after giving the inner a coat of krust and anti rust primer. This was in between filler and primer coats on the other side so I could crack on and get it done.

Got the knoblies on the wheels in between more primer coats.

Threw some colour at it. It's deffo good from a few feet lol.

Changed out the struts for a set of second-hand bilstiens that I got a few months ago. Had to remove my vertical hydro handbrake as they are not allowed over there and also put in a set of 4 point harnesses because they don't like belt anchor points on seat frames either. Got it all put together and had it out for a run last night and tidied up a few bits today.

Packed up ready for the boat.
