New Audi Model/engine designations

Can someone please make sense of this for me. What happened just sticking 3.0 after the model number?

30/35/40/45/50/55 FSI/TDI. They’re mostly 2.0L as far as I can tell but the naming convention isn’t ubiquitous across the range. What might be a “35” on one model appears to have different power output on another.

I’m looking at A3/4/5/6 deals and it’s very difficult to compare like for like. Similarly the trim levels across the range don’t seem to mean the same thing either in terms of what you get standard.

Have I just had a long week or is anyone else a bit confused by this?

Just dropped a friend down to lift his new A4 Avant S Line from the docks.. I looked at the back of it and though, Jesus a 3.5 TFSI bet that goes OK !!! Then i heard its a 2.0 TFSI with 150 bhp...I have no idea what they are at..

No. Drove into Ards last week behind an Audi A1, which I thought was a 3.0!

Googled it:

  • 25 – 80kW (107bhp) and below
  • 30 – 81-96kW (109-129bhp)
  • 35 – 110-120kW (148-161bhp)
  • 40 – 125-150kW (168-201bhp)
  • 45 – 169-185kW (227-248bhp)
  • 50 – 210-230kW (282-308bhp)
  • 55 – 245-275kW (329-369bhp)

So is the 55 the new “S”? I’m pretty sure I saw an S5 listed earlier with less than that on one of the Audi websites. What a ball ache.

It’s to do with the total amount of Kilowatts each car produces.

Kilowatts : unamused:

BHP or gtfo. I watch a few things on YouTube and they talk about Kilowatts the engine makes. No idea what that is in real terms

In a daily that’s a noticeable difference. Makes quick reading quotes a pain in the ****.

Its crap looking and pointless - I also thought at one stage I saw a 5 litre A7 down south - was shocked and then realised what it was after looking it up!

Pretty daft move on Audi’s part this. Confusing and they had no need to do this in the first place.

Never mind the 30-40-50 keek ,what’s annoying me is that the s4-5-6-7 are going derv .saying that would be ok at £0.75 ppl running costs .
If all the range rovers at £60k+ can run red then why not an Audi s4 😂

I believe you can only get a Quattro in 45 and above as well, anything below this is front wheel drive only.

Just ridiculous. I was actually behind an A5 with 40 TFSI on the back and I was thinking that must go well. So it seems it's 200bhp max.

And potentially only 160ish, in a car that size.

Kinda coincidental they’re following the BMW convention now no? But the corresponding power figures significantly less.

BMW did lose the plot a bit as well going to the 40d and 50d nomenclature, which I guess being an owner after time I’ve made some sort of sense of.

Rover however always got it right though. 216i you knew it was a 1.6. And the assurance that it was probably a complete bundle.

The 40 and 50 though you knew were putting down big power at least. I think a lot people are going to see those badges on Audi’s and think the same thing, a lot of us car nerds have already been caught out. Seems like a very cynical move to me!

It's absurd IMO, was on the old Dublin road in the truck a few months back, and my helper goes to me holy fk there's a 5 litre TDI a8, I'd already seen the car while on my bike and caught a glimpse of the same badge thinking wtf, it's honestly bonkers...

I'd gladly go back to 323 meaning a 2.3 3 series, 328 being a 2.8, c230 being a 2.3 etc etc

I think the problem is they’re all 2l now. The new 330 is a 2l with some fettling as well if I’m not mistaken.

Maybe this is the decline of bigger engines we were warned about :worried:

So how do you tell what the hp is if the number means a range, not an exact number? Or does it depend on petrol or diesel.

Does that just leave Merc putting the engine size on badges? Can't think of any other mainstream manufacturers doing it now.
