After owning the 2003 V40 and the 2005 S60 I was convinced that old Volvos make excellent cheap daily barges. I hadn’t even planned on changing the S60 but this appeared for sale with very limited info and it peaked my interest. I had never seen an S80 SE Sport and thought this stood out from any other S80 I had seen with the big wheels.

It was for sale at the same place I bought my S60 from and they were great to deal with so I paid a visit on Monday morning and left a deposit and picked it up on Tuesday.

It’s a 2008 S80 D5 185bhp Auto with 166k miles and a very nice spec list which includes:
Heated and ventilated leather seats
Factory Nav with remote
Car phone (old school in the centre console)
4C adaptive dampers
Volvo tow bar
Volvo roof bars
Bi-Xenon adaptive headlights
Premium sound system
Parking sensors
Aftermarket bluetooth
Electric front seats
Electric sunroof
Auto dim mirror with compass

It was only MOTd last week and good tyres and decent history so for really not very much money it’s now mine. Loving how lazy automatic is to drive and it’s not too bad on fuel with an average of around 40mpg so far.

So far I’ve replaced both xenon bulbs as one had gone pink and replaced the side marker bulbs as they were both blown. Also I know they aren’t to everyone’s taste but I got a new set of plates made up to freshen it up a bit. I might get a wheel refurb after winter but for now I’m just enjoying wafting along in it.

Excuse the poor pics, it needs a good wash and some proper photos taken in daylight.

Love old Volvos like that. Luxo barge wafting for little money.

Well the big S80 has had its first issue. I had noticed a little bit of an oil leak which has turned out to be the return pipe from the turbo to the sump. It wasn’t too bad at all until I was going in to work on Christmas Eve and was greeted with this. The security guard even came looking for me as he thought I’d sumped it. It looks 10 times worse due to the ground being wet but not ideal. I also now need to figure out how to get oil stains off my driveway.

On a happier note I got a nav update disc with the 2018 maps as part of my Christmas present and my other half has ordered me a set of wind deflectors too. Hoping to get it back from the mechanic on Saturday and hopefully all will be sorted and it will retain all its oil. Even though it’s a workhorse I’m treating this one a lot better than the previous ones. I’m careful about where I park it and might even get a wheel refurb and tint the back windows when the weather improves. So far so good.

Old skool
Drop of washing powder down will lift the bulk of the oil mate but depending on your surface it might not ever lift fully. Good comfy big cruiser tho.

Boredom set in yesterday and I cleaned it myself for the first time in my ownership. Even gave it a quick hand polish and a coat of wax which is unheard of for my workhorse. Normally it gets a visit to the hand car wash when the number plates become unreadable. Up close the paint is in poor condition and it has seen plenty of bumps and scrapes over its 175k miles life but at least now it looks good from a distance. Wheels will be refurbished after lockdown as they really let the car down.

Love it. I used to have one almost the same spec and it was a glorious big barge. The wheels defo freshen it up loads. What sort of mpg are you getting from it?

They are such a comfy big thing. Only thing is they are really massive and it makes tight manoeuvres a pain in the hole compared to the smaller S60 which I could chuck in anywhere. MPG isn’t great but it’s not bad either. Tend to get high 30s or low 40s with mixed driving but the manual S60 was always sitting around 50 MPG.

Yeah its not small that's for sure. I remember the turning circle on mine being absolutely laughable too. I think id have kept it much longer if it was a diesel, sadly wouldn't really work for me now with the dog.

Probably some of the best cars you can buy now in terms of luxury for your money!

So the happiness was short lived. A day after getting it back with the tyres sorted and wheel refurb it decided to seize a rear brake calliper. I had no other option but to keep on driving so it’ll now need discs and pads too. Dropped it off to my local mechanic this morning. Hopefully will get it back on Tuesday.

Got the car back and am very happy that my local mechanic is really honest. I left it with him to replace the calliper and he called me to say it was just the pads that had got stuck and the calliper was fine. Got it back with only having to buy pads and a very small amount of labour. The only annoyance was my freshly refurbed wheel was covered in fallout from the pad grinding down to the metal. This was thankfully solved by Anachem Purge.

On another happy note it’s going to be kept clean until at least the end of the year as I won unlimited free washes at the car wash I use. I think they’ll regret this come winter time as I do neglect it when the weather is bad.

Nice, think I preferred the Volvo though!

Volvo was a bit different and was a very floaty and wafty big thing. The A6 sticks to the road a lot better and is more fun to drive on the back roads. I’d wanted a facelifted Le Mans A6 for quite a while and with turning 30 recently and not being able to celebrate I treated myself to it.
