Option 2 all the way
Mervyn rebuilt the engine on my 964. He is excellent at everything he does,
my only regret is selling the car, it’s now in Hong Kong ☹️
so put yours back together, and wait till funds allow a full restoration. You will not regret it!

Ah yes the 'what have I let myself in for' stage.

This is normal.

I remember having a moment like this on the MK2. Bits of it everywhere, everything needing cut off or fighting me all the way, parts missing and dumping a fortune into new replacement parts. One step forward and two steps back. Painful.

I did it in small bits myself. A morning here or there to do one wee job and a couple weeks off towards the end to push it across the line. Its still not done either but its good enough to be usable so that'll do for now.

I'd be inclined to send it to the restoration place in Poland depending on cost obviously.

A car like that would never be finished and would just suck up soooo much time in chasing things.

Or any of the many English restoration places. Or your local man if he's up for it and willing to commit, sounds like he knows what he's doing too.

Doing a car like this a bit at a time will take years and still cost a fortune when all is said and done. Some enjoy that process itself, that's totally fair if so. Must be really satisfying when it's done, just a long slog.

But if you enjoy the finished result and actually using the cars more then lock it away, protected but out of sight, while building funds. Then get it sent away to whoever you trust to do the work.

Also, have a long hard think about just how far you want to take it. Just something that runs, or full on show car restoration? We all know how quickly these things go completely out of hand, lol.

In the meantime just enjoy the wee Ferrari instead

Very wise words. I’ve built a few project cars & it doesn’t take a genius to work out I’m better at my work specialising in what I do to let somebody who specialises in classic Porsche restorations do what they do.

Did you talk to Jon in Limerick? He’s usually got a long waiting list so would give you time to save up.

Touched base with him this time last year. He was expecting to evaluate the car but lockdown kicked in. In an ideal world thats where the car will go. One stop shop.

Class, Good luck and keep going! My favourite TV show is Californication and the Star was always his Porsche 911 to me!

Option 3 Barry,
Option 1. Sell as project
Option 2. Put it all back together, push it into my garage & wait for a more disposable income to get it finished right.
Option 3. Go on the rip & everything will sort itself out.

Option 3 is 100% the best move Barry, I reckon I could get that dizzy and alternator off if I was naked and steaming.

Small Update for all those left wondering whatever became of Barry's lost & found 964.
I am the lucky one Barry decided to entrust his project to so I have it almost finished now for the time being and enjoying daily spins over the mountains here in Tipperary.
Briefly what i did was to strip it out and start from scratch. As Barry had said almost everything was seized from the sea air. Only paintwork needed were the 2 bumpers. Original paint is still very presentable.
Rebuilt the engine (had 8 broken head studs)
Dizzy was sent to Germany to be rebuilt as it was completely seized up.
All electrics sorted & working as should. Ripped out no less than 3 aftermarket alarm systems .
Added 17" Cups
2 front seats replaced with lightweight ones. 2 together weigh less than 1 original
Because of its Californian origin the ride height is higher so a set of Eibachs will be fitted shortly.
All in All turned out a very nice car and worth the effort.
