Wee update from today then. Car went great and I definitely learnt a lot about its handling. Actually quite well balanced and still has enough power to get the back end out. Easy controlled on the limit as well. The tyres are rubbish though, 3 year old P Zeros so will get them changed.

Couple of wee issues, thought I'd a coolant leak but it was just the overflow and then it for very smokey towards the end, but which has now cleared. At first thought I'd cracked a head, but all looks OK. Maybe need to let it idle longer after coming in? Will also look at the air oil separator when I drop the engine over winter as I know they give bother.

Great fun anyways, lapped 1:13.46 which is the same as what I managed in the Mini GP lol. Will try and get the Clio to the next one of I can get gearbox done in time, be good to compare.

Few videos, nothing spectacular, just plain laps really. And one of when I nearly binned it, felt worse in person tbf and though oh no, I'm just about to become the d1ck who spins at the hairpin lol, but made me smile when I caught it 😂

I do get the same thing, few buffs smoke after warm or cold start sometimes, but it clears off rather quick. Read about it just because of the flat engine design? Few puffs are ok, just don’t inhale😂😂

Long post warning!

So rather than diagnose problems via the Internet and throw random bits at it, I thought I'd treat the car and book it in to McMillan Porsche for a proper once over. Few other things I needed checked anyways, and always good to get the experts to check over the work I've done so far.

The car had never been to them before, spending its entire life between Porsche Belfast and AMG(Alan Mcgookin) the other local specialist. Had heard good things about McMillan so wanted to see for myself.

So the smoke issue first, those of you who were at the track day witnessed how horrific it looked. Also witnessed the colour drain from my face when I thought it had blown up 😂 Anyways, it hasn't done it again since and seemed to be just after restarting the engine after being out on track. I'd eliminated it being a cracked head as both exhausts were smoking, and oil and coolant levels were unchanged. The guys found nothing untoward and did a smoke test and road tests, but all is good.

From reading the forums, a lot of the 996 era seem to suffer with the same smoke after hard track use. In short theres an air oil separator on top of the engine and when the oil froths up with hard track use, it can't cope with the separation as well as it should. This results in oil mist being injected back into the air inlet instead of being removed, hence the smoke as it burns off. There is a motorsport AOS available that some people run, but I think I'll just replace for a standard one when I drop the engine.

So other findings were a few things that were my fault or that I knew about.
Horn not working(haven't put the new pin in the clock spring contact plate yet since replacing wheel), number plate lights not working(I forgot to plug them in when I had bumper off), air con pipe squashed under drivers side, 3 x lower arms have play/perished dust covers(could feel one knocking), one top mount, two front shocks, fan resistor(I knew the fan wasn't a ring as it should, didn't know why), 2 cracked coil packs, tired looking drive belt and the rear main seal is weeping slightly(I'd noticed this and was monitoring it)

They definitely gave the car a great going over! I'd planned to fit Ohlins coilovers at some point so this maybe gives me the kick up the hole I needed.

The plan was to get a list together and do the jobs myself over winter, but I just checked the warranty I got from Porsche and it covers wear and tear items and fingers crossed, looks like a lot of the above will be covered! So will get it booked in and get everything blitzed before putting it away for winter.

Definitely will use Mcmillan again, very knowledgeable guys.

Very nice, how long did you leave your car there? I plan to do the same, to sort out the fuel smell issue in my car👍

Left it up yesterday morning at 9.30ish and they were done checking it over by late afternoon. I only lifted it again today as I couldn't be bothered getting train back up to Antrim yesterday.

You'll not be disappointed mate, they were very thorough and took plenty photos for me

I was just feeling more and more sorry for your bank account as I read that, but it would be incredible if the warranty will cover it all, that car will be perfect!

@JT079 is yours a 996/986/987? Google cracked fuel sender, I've just been through that with my Boxster lol

McMillan are brilliant, I know people often comment that others are cheaper, however George has the team up there really ensuring every inch is checked and they often find important things that a normal mechanic would just dismiss. To the average person, they wouldn't care, as they just want the immediate thing fixed, however preventative maintenance is just as important.

Just about to phone George actually as my window regulator has sh1t the bed :worried:

I recently drove a 996 Carrera 4 and after a brisk acceleration, the reek out the back gave me complete fear - but as you said, everything was normal there after and what you explained has put my mind at ease further lol

It a 79 911, so all the funny smells may be coming from the expansion tank and carbon canister plus the connection tubes. I hope it is not due to the fuel pipes as it may be an bloody nightmare engine-out job...

you watch Homebuilt By Jeff on youtube mate? He has a similar era 911 and seems like the engine comes out in about 5 mins!

So luckily enough the warranty company agreed to pay out on the majority of stuff! Very impressed with that!

Not covering the rear main seal weep but I can sort that when I drop the engine.

Left in this morning so will hopefully get it back driving like a new car with new lower arms, top mounts and shocks.
