The Porsche 911 SC RS was a bit of an odd ball car in many ways. It only really came about because Porsche couldn't get the turbo charged, four-wheel drive 959 built quick enough for Group B. So they decided to develop a stop-gap evolution of their existing rally car, the 911 SC, to fill the void. Enter the 911 SC RS.

The team was run by David Richards Autosport (DRA - now Prodrive) with significant Rothmans sponsorship. The 911 SC RS was an old fashioned, naturally aspirated rally car, which was never going to be properly competitive against the Audi Quattros and Peugeot 205 T16s on gravel. But tarmac was a different story.

During the 1980s, Rothmans pumped significant sponsorship into the Circuit of Ireland, which meant visitations from the DRA Porsche 911s in 1984, 1985 and 1986.

I can't find a picture of Al-Rajhi, as he binned the car in the early morning darkness of day 2. Coleman also retired later in the event.

Here's some in-car action

Billy Coleman did have more success with the 911 SC RS in other rallies though. He won the 1985 Donegal Rally after a very close battle with Austin MacHale

And second in the 1985 Cork 20

Both Coleman and Al-Rajhi tackled the 1986 Galway International rally, in wintry conditions. Despite the snow, Coleman won by over 6 minutes.

After the poor showing on the Circuit of Ireland, Coleman switched to a DRA run MG Metro 6R4 for Donegal. The 911 SC RS basically disappeared from view from Irish rallying following that switch. The demise of Group B at the end of 1986 sealed the fate of the 911 SC RS along with most other Group B machines.

Great thread. Quiet morning I take it :p I was doing a bit of reading this morning after the other thread too lol.

In Donegal in '85 Coleman in the 911 made up nearly 2 seconds a mile on the last day to beat McHale in a Manta 400 by 1 second. That was after they seen off Tony Pond in the Metro 6r4's international debut and Fisher in a works Manta 400. Its still the closest finish in Donegal history.

Ive a few pics of the historic Porches waiting to start the Milford stage from this years rally that ill throw up later. Pictures do not do the sound any justice though, the noise of a flat 6 between the ditches is epic.

I'm glad people found it interesting. Hard at work here, @davecoupe! - check the time, posted last night ;)

When I see the pictures and videos from that particular period, it shows just how special an event the Circuit of Ireland was and how important it was to sponsors. No expense was spared and it must have been a delight to see these cars and genuine world class drivers on our roads.

I had never saw the 1985 Donegal International rally footage until last night and it was a great watch. Billy Coleman and Austin MacHale were massive rivals by that stage, so it must have been a sweet victory. I have the Tarmac Titans box set at home, which I now must get round to watching in detail.

As well as Ireland, the 911 SC RS was used extensively on tarmac rallies across continential Europe and Al-Rajhi won a Middle East Rally Championship with it. However, I think the highest placed finish was 5th or so at WRC level.

Whilst pictures of the cars from that period competing in Ireland can be hard to come by, thankfully there is plenty of YouTube footage.

I was out spectating on the 1984 circuit on my bike cos I wasn't old enough to have a licence. I cycled to two stages outside hillsborough / dromore and saw them again on the other side of the weekend. Have to admit I was a big Ascona, Manta and Escort fan at that stage and thought that someone arriving with a big torquey flat six was cheating. I loved the high revving 4 cylinder motors and hadn't developed my love of V6's at that stage..
Class craic watching coleman in the Manta (LIJ?) but you could see the 911's were proper special. '85 & '86 were great with the proper group B cars coming over..
Think I have some of my mate's pics of the 911's from 1985 circuit. I'll check later.(y)

Scary watching those spectators packed into a hairpin like that, you wouldn't be allowed to stand on that escape road for at least a mile now.

Cool thread, I have a copy of the 1984 circuit programme here. I got a book last year on the porsche 911 in Irish rallying, happy to lend it to you @Cess . Looking forward to seeing the new gt class running this year too.

No probs @Cess
Just for reference, the first one was taken at the top hairpin at hamilton's folly and the other two were taken at ballynoe between downpatrick and tyrella.

If you lent me that book @scotty you'd never ever get it back!

Coleman won the STP Irish Tarmac Championship in 1985 in the SC RS. He won Donegal, was second on the Cork 20 and fifth in the Circuit of Ireland. Does the book say if he competed on any other rounds?

My thoughts too, doesn't seem like that long ago either.

To be fair it was 30 years ago and before the Portugal accident which killed off Group B. Marshalling was a lot more lax back ten too even though anybody sensible would have been on the inside of corner exits etc. Crowds were massive then too compared to now. Not saying it was ok, just that it was 'of it's time'.. A lot of stuff was acceptable then that isn't now, sometimes good, sometimes bad. :relieved:
