Hey all, I'm getting married on the 23rd of September, and as usual the man has 2 things to sort; suits and cars.

I sorted the suits yesterday, and have had a VW bus sorted for the bridal party for a good while, and all but confirmed to have a beetle sorted for Claire her Dad to arrive at the church in. The final piece was a car for me to arrive at the church in, and then drive off with Claire in, a 964. Now the owner of the 964 never promised me the car, only if it was road legal come September. Was talking to him today and its highly unlikley he will have the car MOT'd etc this year, gutted but can't blame him as it was just an idea I had last year and there was nothing set in stone.

I've had a look at all of the NI/ROI car hire sites and nothing is suitable, maybe the Black 356 Speedster but I really don't want a black car.

So now I'm appealing to the RMS masses to help me find a car I could borrow for the day/half-day, that the owner would let me drive. Criteria below

  • Light coloured; White, cream, ivory, very pale yellow or maybe silver depending on the car. Has to be one of these colours.
  • Classicly styled; Nothing like a Escort RS Turbo, more along the lines of a 60s (?) car, pre-964 Porsche, MGs etc.
  • Either convertible or coupe, as much as I'd love something like an E12 BMW, don't think it would go down well, lol.
  • Something like a Karmann Ghia would be ideal to be honest, or a Porsche Speedster, Porsche 914, Chrome bumper MG B.
  • No watercooled Porsches.

Wedding is a Friday, I can come collect the car on a thursday night or the Friday morning, and can arrange to the have the car left back that evening, or the next morning.

I have Comprehensive driving extension with no limitations, but if the car is not currently insured I can arrange temperary cover for myself.

Also technically I can't pay the person as it becomes hire and then it gets messy with insurance etc, but I will make the sure owner is adequatle compensated for their help.

If anyone on here would have something or knows someone with in the above the criteria and would be willing please let me know.

I'd leave a deposit, and once I returned the car would take less of the deposit back.

surely you are only covered 3rd party to drive the car?

Did you not have issues with an insurance company previously, this is verging on dangerous territory if someone was to crash into you for example, try explaining that you borrowed it from a friend and were not paying him for the hire.

I would never trust someone to borrow a car such as you are looking if I didnt know them. What happens if it overheats and you toast the engine, or the gearbox breaks on you whilst you are in possession of it, it could be you at fault or it may be just **** luck, but either way I think you could end up with a headache if something was to happen.

No, I upgraded my 3rd Party Extension to Fully Comp extension, think it was a £20 option for my policy.

No longer with my previous insurer.

The driving will be minimal, potentially only Lurgan to Aghagallon if the person wished.

Might be easier to get someone to meet you outside the church even, and let you drive in/out of the grounds, just for the show.

Last time I lent someone a car it came back with a mystery scuff on the bumper which 'was there when you gave it to me'. Since then never again (unless it's the Jimny which is probably safer in anyones hands but mine).

Lots of classic policies have wedding cover by the way. It's something like a £20 add-on for the day and can be done online really quickly by the owner. No need for the "less deposit out than in" lark. It's pretty common and most classic owners will have the option (I do for the Metro for example). In saying that the cover is usually only for the owner to drive the car and not someone else.

Your reception in Aghagallon? We had ours in the riverdale.

I brought my golf and hired a mk2 jag for the journey from Lurgan to Aghagallon.

Id say forget about the idea of you driving. If the chance comes up, accept it as a gift and be happy but I think expecting to drive will leave you disappointed. Think of the hassle/risk for the owner is having to let you park the car outside overnight and then be in a fit state to drive it back to them the next morning. Save yourself the hassle is my advice.

Now, in saying that, I had to sort our wedding car and got a silver Aston DB6. It drove my wife to the church and then both of us to the reception. On arriving outside the hotel the owner jumped out and told us to get in the front and take her for a spin on down the road ourselves. Totally unexpected and it was nice driving it back into the venue with everyone waiting for us. So as I say, don't expect it and it might happen.

Just sit in the passenger seat and enjoy being driven while necking a bottle of brandy.

That's what I did in the Noble all the way to Cavan, and then remembered I was getting to drive the last wee bit up to the castle lol.

You would need full proper car cover for a owner to be even remotely tempted

Dad has a 87 911 but at valued between 40 and 50 grand now I highly doubt he would be tempted. It's also guards red so doesn't suit your requirement. Is air cooled and is targa topped though.

It could be a possibility of me driving it or for photo use, possibility. If that's any use

One thing though, if it's wet it won't happen. So could let you down knowing our weather. A lot of other classic owners will be the same opinion too

As for whatever insurance, it will need an agreed value. As they are worth to much now to just let some whab in a office think 'sure it's 30 year old it's worth 10 grand max'

Should the worse happen.
