Are project binky on YouTube using same engine and gearbag as this?

Not top clued up but sounded similar.

The detail in your posts is class keep it up!

I’m loving reading your updates. Even more so the knowledge that never in years would I be able to even attempt to do any of it.

I love seeing people with skills I don’t have, making full use of them

Thanks, they are using a 4 cylinder paccar engine its the smaller brother of the 6 cylinder. I have to have the sound of a big six theres just something about it. and the crazy amounts of power they make.

I kept on working on the model after work in the evenings preparing for the weekends fabrication, I added the grill, radiator, gearbox engine mounts etc, and one thing that kept bugging me was the lack of space around the engine in the chassis rails and this is where 3d really starts to pay off.
I was able to play and measure the excate point at which i could nick and bend the rails to get my radiator in and make the rails parrallel and what width they should be after bending. what the cross tape measurement should be and what angle they will end up. i then drew in the front crossmember and engine mount to suit the new width.

3Chassis 4.PNG
chassis 5.PNG
chassis 6.PNG

I then stripped the entire front end cut the axle mounts off and began making my wider chassis a reality, made the cuts and removed the remains of all the old brackets. The old brace ive set ontop shows the change in with of 150mm and the rails now running square instead of tapered to the front.

Excellent straightness quite difficult working out the preheat and pull of the metal to get it to end up staying in square but i got there.

Radiator fits perfectly in the gap same as the model :confounded: not very often that happens for us engineers.

69262830_380676942615485_6129973291324014592_n.jpg

Then getting rid of the remains of the old crossmember cutting and burning out old stubbourn rivets and beating the snot out of it.

Fits up just as intended, I love it when a plan comes together. Just need to get the final position fixed and ill weld that in and add some gussets.

Another full saturday spent dealing with mess rust and dirt, I love it really. hopefully I can get the engine in tomorrow and get everything welded up ready for blasting and some nicer work.

Cheers,
Ged

That's serious work there! Just one thought, were the chassis rails narrow at the front to allow mounting the smaller engine or to allow more steering lock? Always a compromise somewhere to think about. What CAD package do you use? I used to use Catia V5 but I haven't sat in front of a machine in years and you loose the skills quickly when you aren't current.

Loving this thread, class work. (y)

Yup thats correct but with changing axles and going to euro style axles ill be running a wider offset so ill still be able to get 90 degrees theroetically but ill be fouling drag links etc way before that.

Been busy over the weekend mounting the engine and removing the old gearbox crossmember and finding and fabricating mounts

Front crossmember now welded into place

Working on the rear mounts will have these finished and gusseted up soon. The engine lies at a slight 4 deg down angle to allow a 5" prop to go under the floor, but added some complexity to the mounts.

Try not to, but "winter is coming" im doing my best to stay out late in the evenings after work and get as much done before the dark nights and cold comes. I am pretty tired most days now but it will all be worth it.

Great stuff, was wondering as some of the really old trucks had really small turning circles due to the need to manouevre around yards that were built for horse and carts.
Love the detail and the amount of progress at the moment. (y)

Cheers, yea @FM155 some of the old photos of them are class, must email the lumber comapny in california and see if there are any old pics of this truck,

I had bit of a slow weekend on the GMC as I had MCMA1's 110 in for some suspension upgrades and spent some time on the dodge ram.

Chassis is now completely stripped flipped over and a bolt in gearbox crossmember fabbed, rear bumper removed.

Chassis now ready to be sand blasted and brought back in for build up.

Thats the chassis away for blasting and the engine brought in for strip down and clean up. Full gasket kit been ordered for the cummins.

Now i just need to decide on an accent colour scheme for under the bonnet to start and get everything painted.

You going to galvanise the chassis or just paint it?

Moving along rightly now. Don’t forget to leave some time to enjoy the bike before winter sets in 😉

I might get out on the toy at the weekend, Plan for the chassis is to get it blasted and zinc primed for the winter so i can fab up all the suspension and drive line then strip it and galv after everything is in place.

Been at the dirty slow work all week. Needle gun wire wheel rinse paint repeat but starting to get somewhere with the engine now.

Stripping the top end and turbo off im very happy with the condition of the engine it was low miles but theres no gunk intsight and the coolant has been changed as theres no rust on the water jacket. Exhausts are clear from oil and everything looks good :grinning:

Several hours with the needle gun and wire wheel on the drill removing rust and gunk and the first layer of zinc primers on this side of the block
69943697_2552566818310086_3240913245602578432_n.jpg

Then all the alu got a touch and etch primed and zinc primed

Finally decided on a paint scheme and ive picked up a really nice deep gunmetal metallic to coat the accent peices. Get the top coats on soon.

Yes @natogreen16v looking into space for a compound setup with a VNT atmosphere charger and a HE351 manifold im after pleanty of poke but i want it to have down low response/torque.

well done Ged,
amazing read so far. Really looking forward to seeing more updates.

Cheers ill do my best.

Still no chassis back from blasting yet so turned my attention to the lack of turret shifter on the Spicer T5, Pulled a few parts out of storage and started brain storming how to make it work. Stumbled across an old landy shifter id butchered to fit a ZF box for another conversion and what do you know with a little machining and an adapter plate that just might work.

Stick it into CAD

70245623_496905541129294_976744965486936064_n.png

Produce the DXF for the plasma and get her blown out this week.

71107346_447013212567754_6932467946098786304_n.png

Then just got to thin the shifter ball down on the mill and I should have a working turret mount shifter for a spicer.

Started cleaning the paint on the cab, any bits of rust i investigated with a flap wheel on the grinder

Cab sits nicely on the welding table and it handy moved around, knew the cab corner was needing replaced ive a new one there so i started cutting away the bad metal.

Overall the cab isnt is bad nick there are alot of dents in it which will test my panel beating skills, also there is some lead filler in places not sure how to deal with that.

Also pulled the seats to get reapholstered.

Thanks to MCMA1/Andy for the laser scanning of the GMC body. I now have all the information to use for the design of the steering suspension axles, headache rack and bed.

Not to mention the sheetmetal work for the tunnel firewall and RHD conversion.

That is properly class, great to be able to design around the actual geometry! Super cool, must be some kit to be able to do those size of components. I've seen 3D laser scanning of detail machined parts for inspection purposes a few years back so I'm not that surprised the technology has developed. For some reason, Rolls-Royce were having difficulty getting a reliable scan of the Trent XWB engine although they were trying to verify the position of interfaces on external systems which was always going to be difficult.

Its some peice of kit @mcma1 would be able to tell you more about it than i ever could.

Been busy this past week or so working on the shed GMC and Dodge. But made some decent progress this weekend

Shifter is made for the Spicer gearbox using a LR shifter tower to convert to top mounted shifter.
