Retaining registration

Can you buy a registration straight to retention?

Or do you first have to buy it for an existing car, and then transfer it to a retention certificate, and then finally get the old reg back on the "temporary" car?

The last one I got from DVLA direct came on retention, I assigned it to my car from the reference on the cert. You get I think 10 years to assign it to a vehicle

They come directly on retention certificate.

Yep, just bought it off DVLA and it went straight to retention to be assigned within 10 years.
