Just got sorted for the year with Greenlight for my 9n3 Polo GTi, moving on from HIC. Neil was a pleasure to deal with on the phone, owning a mk4 1.8T himself in the past, his knowledge of the car and my modifcations was flawless.

@Tony@Greenlight, go and buy this man a beer after work!

Top show,
Thanks guys.

Hi Tam9n,

You'll find most of our people are just like Neil.

Whilst we're an Insurance firm, we are a non-standard specialist. Covering performance cars, modified cars and vans, kit cars, custom cars, motorsport vehicles, camper vans/motorhomes and classic cars. Most of the people who work here have a personal interest, experience and have owned or ran the types of cars we arrange cover for. Which as you found, is a pleasant change to most mainstream Insurance companies and really helps.

Thanks again for your custom - i'll go and award Neil with a beer token now (y)

Kind regards

Tony

Would it be possible for yous to insure a 19 year old on a 1998 jap import 1.8 mx5. Literally the only driving the car will get is to and from 6/7 events each year and maybe to and from the garage. Well under driven 2000 miles per year. Only mods are hydraulic handbrake and bucket seats and harnesses. 2 years driving as named driver, no points or claims. If so name your price or message me

Quite disappointed with Greenlight, for the second year in a row, not even providing me with a quote as it was nowhere near competitive any quote I had received before (which weren't even that brilliant).

Golf GTI MK6, 22 y/o, 2 years NCB. I totally get the age vs. hot hatch thing but after reading through this thread regularly I did expect better from a company that specialises in this type of thing.

@Tony@Greenlight You seem to be very well thought of on here, and that hasn't came about over night or for no reason so maybe it's just my criteria? If there's anything you can do to help, I'd appreciate it. PM me if more suitable!

I asked for a quote from greenlight last week, but it wouldn't quote me and just told me that my current insurer was cheaper

Hi WSM,

Sorry WSM, im afraid not.

We've posted about this quite a lot in the past.

They're really well engineered cars, but the cost to repair (parts and labour) is high, they're theft attractive cars (1 series in particular) and with the rear wheel drive factor compounding this with a high claim frequency for everyday use in winter conditions. Our Underwriters are still not looking to cover modern BMW models.

Kind regards

Tony

@Tony@Greenlight are you still not touching BMWs?

Hi Liam,

We could cover the vehicle, as well as the modifications. But all of our current products only cover drivers aged 21 or older who have a least a year's actual NCB earned upon a policy in their own name.

Thanks for thinking of us, but im afraid we'll not be able to help until you turn 21.

Kind regards

Tony

So apparently my insurance has gone up in price this year with Greenlight. Never had that before ffs.

Hi David,

Thanks for posting.

Sorry to see that you premium had increased this year, but hopefully it's not been too dramatic.

We will always source the best possible price we have available to you at that point in time and do check 100% of our renewals against all products available to us. Which makes sure we send you the most competitive offer that we have available for your current circumstances.

Your renewal terms will always be provided upon your risk profile (the latest information we have been provided by you), this can be based upon detail up to 12 months ago.

With this in mind, in addition to providing you a renewal quotation based upon, we do also call to check to ensure that your circumstances haven’t changed. As there are rating factors such as lower mileage, the type of vehicle use, 2nd (or additional) vehicle ownership, different cover requirements, less drivers, amongst others that can improve what we can do for you.

@David_Showerks mine has went up also. That's why I was checking with @Tony@Greenlight

Hi WSM,

You’re not alone.

I know you’re not with us, but rate increases have been across the entire motor market and there are quite a few policyholders experiencing this.

We do incorporate a renewal discount within our products, but if you’re already receiving maximum discounts (including for NCB, your age banding and the maximum renewal discount) within your premium, the premium increase will me more visible where you don’t have increasing discounts (such as NCB) to offset this.

Insurance premium tax has been increased by the government to 9.5% back in November 2015, so if you’ve arranged cover or received a renewal since, you will have had this within your premium.

Claims inflation (the cost of handling/settling and claims presented) is also an issue and in addition to this, you can find increases through Underwriters recategorizing risk factors that have been performing poorly for them in terms of premium received vs claims paid. Which could be anything from licence length held, to drivers with certain conviction types, specific postcodes or vehicle models.

I’ve copied some detail below from money market, which reiterates this.

UK motor insurance premiums see biggest rise since 2011

Comprehensive car insurance premiums in Britain rose 13.2 per cent in 2015, the biggest annual rise since 2011, according to Confused.com’s car price insurance index. The increase, following a jump of 6.9 per cent in the fourth quarter, pushed the average premium for an annual comprehensive car insurance policy to £672, data from the price comparison website Confused.com and consultants Willis Towers Watson showed.

“The recent increase to Insurance Premium Tax along with inflationary pressures on claims costs, especially to vehicle damage repair costs, have been the major factors driving up prices” UK Head of P&C Pricing at Willis Towers Watson, Stephen Jones said. The cost of third-party fire and theft policy (TPFT) policies rose at a similar rate, up 6.9 per cent in the quarter and 16.8 per cent annually, the company said.

“We’ve now seen 11 consecutive months with no premium decreases, which would suggest that the trend is likely to continue”, Head of Data Services at Confused.com, Steve Fletcher said. In November, the government raised Insurance Premium Tax rise to 9.5 per cent from 6 per cent.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting (and for the opportunities to help).

In terms of covering a MK6 Golf GTI (great car by the way), with you being aged 22 it's likely to be that we're operating with a restricted product range. The main factor will be that due to the higher frequency of total loss claims for young drivers (which is tracked by age banding), quite a number of our products have a vehicle value ceiling based upon the age of the driver.

This will improve year on year and we do cover an awful lot of Golf GTi models, in both standard and extremely modified forms. So i'm sure we'll be able to help at some stage in the future.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi therock,

Thanks for trying us.

It's unusual not to take full details and to run a comparison, so it sounds as though you may have reached one of our admin team upon overflow during a peak time, who may have asked several questions to see if we could help and have felt that based upon the detail taken we would have been unable to compete.

Always happy to revisit these things for you though, so if you need a 2nd opinion I can always run this past our technical pricing team or have one of our senior people look at this for you.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi Alan_B,

Thanks for thinking of us.

We do cover quite a few 350z and 370z's.

Whilst we will require performance rear wheel drive experience to cover these, our products do recognise and provide a discount for ownership of your vehicle for 12 months or more. Which will help.

Sorry about the E91, nice looking car and well engineered, but we've tried everything we can think of in terms of mitigating claims for BMW models and it's still not worked for us.

Winter tyres would probably help, but unless it becomes mandatory in the same way as it is in Germany, it's going to be difficult to enforce. In addition, this would add an expense for drivers who did not see the benefit of the winter tyres and most mainstream Insurers would not insist upon these. Meaning the cost would make us comparatively uncompetitive.

Kind regards

Tony

Mine didn't move an awful lot this year thankfully, although Admiral quoted around 90 quid less when I added my wife to the policy, didn't make a difference with Greenlight.

Thanks for the great service over the years @Tony@Greenlight but looks like this year I've got a decent quote from a decent insurer (not 1st central lol) this time round. Hopefully I'll be back in the future with you guys.

I am a past customer and rang for a quote on my 350z today - I've had the car for about 6 months but was told I absolutely couldn't insure it in the first year of ownership with yourselves. I wasn't asked about previous experience - I have owned both an MR2 and MR2 supercharger in the past and also turbo charged Mazda/Subaru/Toyotas . I have 11 years no claims on one car and 2 years no claims on a lapsed policy with yourselves. Is there no budging on this?

I'd explain that over the phone. I rang a couple of weeks ago to swap from 170hp leon to a 330hp Subaru and they weren't going to do it until i explained that before the leon i was insured on a 320hp subaru ! Have your previous "performance" cars been with Greenlight, or someone else ?

I'll maybe try again, the guy was quick to say no when he heard I had only owned the car for 6 months
