Only alternative as said is to pressure bleed it out. See if it holds.

At least you'd know then. But again if a slave is failing pressure bleeding might not help.

Ok quick update. The Rover's back. It turns out a new clutch and slave cylinder had been fitted by the previous owner. System was force bled as Colin said. Master cylinder may also need replacing but I'll drive it and see. At least it wasn't a gearbox out job after all.

Just to warn, if you change the master often the slave fails several months later just because it's a really efficient version that's new against a efficient older system.

Glad to hear. Watch for a puddle under gearbox as slave is inside it.

Apparently there''s a brand new slave already fitted so hopefully thats not at fault.

Those slave cylinders can go at any time, even new ones. I changed them regularly, at least they were cheap. It is that stupid seal that goes. When it does, it starts leaking, and that's it.

Unlikely to be any issue with the master.

Sigh.

Right firstly on the master, O ring on the piston on master fails, the plastic the piston slides down and snaps / fails, the tank for the fluid bursts when the slave jams inside gearbox, the seals fail where they meet under bonnet to and whole units regularly need changing, when being pressure beld also after refitting regardless if they come prefilled they then need topped up and most don't making for air contamination also making it all the above especially seals happen.

If your thinking about the slave on a pg1 gearbox on a elise or anything other rover source bar a 75 or zt then your wrong. The slave on a 75 is internal in the gearbox. It's full subframe and box out routine for change and if it bursts it usually takes the clutch with it as it will be progressive leak not allowing thrust bearing to engage right and then its clutch destroyed.

For about 4 years there where terrible quality units, from 2007 to 2011 mostly from stuff sold on as surplus parts when price Waterhouse sold Mg rover and stuff wasnt up to spec.

Since 2012 likes of borg and beck have been making top quality master and slaves. You can do a master on one in about 2 hours diy, slave well good 2/3s day work really as and when you come against rusty bolts etc.
