Me and a mate have a 2000 SAXO VTS 1.6 lane rally car...............

On the 'Its not the boxing day rally' we seemed to be loosing electrical power half way through so I decided to retire the car and get it home as we could not see anything obvious wrong and it was snowing! We got the car home, just, the wipers stopped 30ft from my house and the car stopped itself 20seconds after I parked it, the battery was at 5volts. We noticed that the alternator terminal was nearly broken off the stud but the nut was spinning so we pulled the alternator out and connected the feed to the top of the alternator on the advice of an auto spark as we could not be sure of the original studs connection. Charged battery, refitted alternator.

Car now will not start, it brings up the immobiliser light on the dash and we have no fuel pump or spark though it will turn over so it seems the immobiliser is stopping it.

so far..................

- Checked all fuses, fine

- Locked and unlocked car

- Disconnected and reconnected battery with ignition on

- Fitted new ignition pick up ring, the plastic ring around the barrel

- Sent the ECU away to get it unlocked, no different! The guy says cannot guarantee the ECU is ok but he has tested ones and can send me one of them for another £30! Not happy about this but I don't even know if the immobiliser IS the problem or if the ECU is fried, unlocked or what!

I have a friend that's a Citroën mechanic though he is only there 6 months. He said to try the pick up ring on the ignition and failing that I would need to bring it in but they need 2 keys, I only have 1 key and anyway I am damned if I am paying main dealer prices for a Saxo!!! They may not be able to fix it anyway. Lisburn Car Electrics told me they couldn't do anything and to take it to Citroen!!!!

I have a Haynes manual on it's way to me for relay and wiring diagrams.

Next idea is to check if the Fuel pump is getting power and if not (and it probably isn't) force it and after that try a new multifunction relay (the big one under the ECU). I am thinking the ECU might be toast or a relay has burnt contacts due the falling voltage.

Does anyone have any ideas on this as we just don't know now?

Also does anyone have a car the same that I could try my ECU in their car? It's a 3 plug Magnetti Marelli 48P2.xx, it would be a fantastic help!

Are you sure the batteries fine? Could have been damaged by driving on it so low. Other than that make sure the alternator fix is 100%. It makes sense to be sure its not related to that issue before you start Inspecting wiring.

Did you check the ignition relay under the ecu they forever give hassle we used to keep spares cable tied to the rollcage.

Its not the crank sensor either

We have no power to the coils or fuel pump so its still ECU/immobiliser/key related. .................we think

I presume you've checked the inertia switch? As stupid as it may sound lol.

I bought one doing similair things, not starting etc,one of the earths to the battery wasn't connected right, connects to the negative terminal, still had power but wouldn't start for whatever reason. Took it apart, cleaned then reconnected and it started fine.

Yes the Inertia switch was the second thing I checked after the fuel pump fuse, it only cuts the fuel pump out and we are getting no spark either.

Where are you from just got a 3 plugged gti back. Also might be able to remove the immobiliser out if that's the problem with new diagnostic updates I got there yesterday.

I'm in the middle of Ballynahinch.

I am expecting another unlocked ECU from England very soon and if that doesn't work it's heading to Citroen. I spoke to their service department who said they had a similar set of circumstances with another Saxo not that long ago and the cars ECU had a blown internal relay.

I keep crossing my fingers but to no avail8-(
