What’s the scene like here? Logically it seems like a good amateur motorsport to break into on a budget?

What would be a good all rounder car for a beginner? Thinking a glanza or the likes would be perfect?

Any info appreciated

Clios seem to be well used - depending on budget I think there may be very well sorted 197 Forsale.

What kind of budget would you expect to pay for something track ready like that?

For some reason circuit etc racing doesn’t interest me - just want to get a speed thrill from A->B. Ideally something turbo

Mx5 would be a good bet for sprints and hillclimb, they are cheap rwd fun and they have their own class in the hill climb series. I think the costs will go up when you start trying to fast from a to b

Only local motorsport I’ve followed is drifting but just feel it’s too expensive to peruse, plus I would probably be ***** lol.

First thoughts would be cool hot hatch glanza/fiesta/mk3 astra gsi?

You need to pick a class firstly before deciding what car you want.

Class 1 and 2 are 2wd road going so the car must be MOT’d etc. Class 1 is up to 1700cc, if the car is turbocharged then you need to multiply the cc’s by 1.4 or something like that. Class 2 is anything above 1700cc. Class 3 is 4wd, classes 4 and 5 are also road going but specialist production cars. From that up then typically you’re getting into stuff that’s 100% track focused.

If you go to anicc.org.uk you’ll find all the info you need in terms of regulations etc.

There's a new MX5 championship at Kirkistown, plan on competing myself next year. Could do sprints with it too etc.

The only think that puts me off sprints is the outlay for very little time behind the wheel

I would say I’m on the budget end of the scale, and I’d also recommend it, great fun

If you want to learn car control, get into autotesting at least for one season as it will stand to you. I'm doing more autotests this year than Targas and really enjoying it. There are loads of them too and most of the single venue events are £20 to enter. Thinking of doing the MX5 class at the Hillclimbs too if I can.

Edit: This was the Larne Motor Club autotest last Tuesday night. Was a great event, started at around 5:30 / 6:00 and we were all done just after 9:00.

I would love to know how you remember where you are going in autotests 😂

Was watching one of Will Corry's videos earlier of him absolutely flat out, j-turns, donuts etc and the skill of remembering where to go was as impressive as the driving lol looks so much fun though

You walk the tests as many times as you can. It's hard to make it sink in the first time you do it but it gets better the more events you do.
Nothing else will teach you car control like it imo.

Feel like I’m whoring it out, but my father is selling his 205 gti that competed at Cultra hill climb a few years back.

I will be selling my 197 at the end of the season, it’s in class 6b which is modified road going multivalve. The reason I went for that class is I have no interior and a full @PeteMoore cage. Means if something goes wrong then you are a lot safer than in a standard car with no cage.

I much prefer the hills to sprints just because of the extra buzz, I agree that they both are poor value compared to other motorsport in terms of track time but that also means less wear and tear and more time for socialising. You should come along to cairncastle at the end of the month and chat to some people.

List of Hill Climbs in 2019:

List of Sprints in 2019:

My advice would be to just get stuck in, don't think about it too much.
There are some events that will let you use a standard road car, get your suit and helmet bought and enter with any car you already own.
While you are there talk to as many people as you can.
You can also split the costs a bit by doing a double entry with a mate.

Hills and Sprints will not be cheaper or require less skill than drifting. If it's drifting you are already into then give that a go instead.

I used to do hillclimbs and compete in class 1 in a £600 saxo VTS. She used to win the class or be there or thereabouts most times out. But the lack of time in the car frustrated me, and it takes a full saturday out of your week. for 6-7mins competetive time on the hill.

I've done off roading as well as autotesting. And by far find the off road boys better craic.

If you are set on budget sprinting hillclimbing i'd go VTS, 106 GTI or MX5

If you are just looking cheap fast turbo fun but wont be competitive with the ones with money a GT turbo, or old Evo/scoob be the job!

For beginner motorsport Alltrack is probably the best in terms of cost vs time in the car
