Tesla Model 3 Performance

Still no tyres so not the update people want 😂

But a little over a month of ownership at 2700miles clocked up I thought I would offer some insight as to what life is like with a Tesla. The weekend seen me do a road trip to Kildare and back again in it that showed the cars utter strengths.

I had done this exact trip in the M4 during the summer and it was a pleasant journey, the m4 is comfortable, effortlessly fast and quite economical. The tesla just outdid it in every aspect for that journey.

Left with a full charge from the house overnight, out into a preheated car on a miserable wet day. No pissing about with keys etc unplug the cable, jump into the car and go.

For a long journey like that, mostly on motorways you just need comfort and ease of driving. Well autopilot just takes that to another level. It’s hard to describe unless you are familiar with it but it really lets you switch off. You aren’t quite a passenger as you are still interacting for overtakes, keeping an eye on the road etc but the car is taking care of so much, including indicating and coming off at exits etc there is no stress in following a map, focusing on your road speed, or even steering.

I have never driven a car over a distance and got out feeling refreshed but that’s exactly how the tesla makes you feel. You can enjoy the music, enjoy the conversation, enjoy the trip in a different way. Then when you know you are heading back to the car to return home, have it preheated, instant cosy car.

I stopped at apple green and had my first experience of a supercharger, wow! Quickly plugged in and I was inside, use the loo, quick bite to eat and by the time I was done my range was pretty much full again. In all of 15mins or so. It would have been more hassle stopping for fuel than it was stoping to charge.

Then you have the one pedal driving, crawling in traffic, negotiating towns etc it is just 100 times easier and more pleasant than a conventional automatic car.

What about the fun aspect? Well one of the only joys of that journey from a driving perspective is leaving the toll booths. Granted there is no noise while leaving it with haste but when you are being shot into the horizon at warp speed, giggling like a child, the noise doesn’t matter.

So far the car has slotted so well into my life. Bob flavin mentioned on the podcast that come a wet miserable day I won’t be enjoying the car. On a wet miserable day, I wouldn’t be enjoying the M4, struggling for traction. In the tesla I am relaxed and chilled.

It genuinely is the perfect daily driver.

The downsides

- the door handles are stupid, awkward to use and passengers are bewildered as to how to get in. Also in the dark you can’t see them at all. Wouldn’t be a problem on a different coloured car but on a black car it is infuriating!

- if there is water on the roof and your window is down there is a Tsunami coming in over your door trims and your arm when you move. Despite knowing this I repeatedly forget and do this to myself regularly. Angers me no end.

That’s it, can’t think of a single other bad thing about it.

Am I glad I still have a noisey petrol car, absolutely! Have I driven the noisey petrol car as often as I thought I would, sadly no. Or maybe that speaks volumes to just how good the Tesla is.

If you have been debating getting one, go for it! But be warned, it will erode away all the things you think you enjoyed about motoring and show you there is a whole other side to it that can really be enjoyed.

That’s enough EV love for today, I may take the M4 a spin later making popping banging noises and feel traditional brutal power just so I don’t turn soft.

Cost is still the issue for me as a daily, I could go and buy a £5k petrol car as a daily and it will still be significantly cheaper to own and run than the Tesla.

In order to keep the "big money" in my fun car that is what I will do.

Looking at the Kia or Hyundai equivalents they are £50k, madness.

For me to spend £50k on a car it has to be something I want to go and drive, not something that gets me from A to B.

I totally get how it is working for you Pete, but honestly how many peoples "daily" is £40-50K?

Yea I get that. If I was comparing it to the likes of a m340i with similar monthlies is where it makes the most sense as a comparison. There are plenty of people driving cars of similar value everyday.

I did the cheap daily thing for years, more out of necessity 😂 but with the miles I am doing I would rather spend my money on the car I am in more of the time and getting the use out of it.

It’s a different type of enjoyment though. It’s similar in a way to how I enjoyed the Range Rover. It was so comfortable and effortless I enjoyed driving it. The tesla is the much the same except you have the tech, speed and autopilot to take it to another level.

I dailyed the M4 for quite a while there and I also enjoyed it too as when the notion or opportunity arose it could turn a commute into something exciting yet it was also comfortable, easy car to drive too. So I still get that appeal but the tesla on balance is much better at being a car for the 70% of my journeys that being a car is what it needs to do well.

In saying that I should get the Porsche back this week and I can’t wait to do some B road blasting in it before it gets tucked up for winter!

Still very much loving my anti social petrol cars, don’t worry I’m not a lost cause yet 😂

Based on the cars you see on our roads, I would say a large percentage.

Great post Pete.

We have a bambino on the way in April, so I need a practical family car and an EV that I can put through the business is looking like the thing to do.

Tesla 3 long range or Audi Q4 E-Tron are the current front runners, but haven't driven either. Interesting to hear this feedback from a Model 3 owner.

Congratulations G. 2 Porsches for sale very shortly then?!

You are probably right, but I wouldn't imagine the vast majority of them also have a £50k fun car home as well.

My point was that I would prefer to put my larger budget into my fun/weekend car, than a fairly uninspiring car I use to go to work or do the shopping.

In an ideal world I would have a £50k budget for both, but we don't live in an ideal world (well at least I don't).

I'm not sure I understand your argument to be honest :joy: ! Is it just they are more expensive than you think they are worth?!

Ultimately its a premium product, and in the same price point as an A8 etc. I don't see the issue with them!

Great insight Pete and for many of your reasons I could well end up with an EV daily next year.

And for those of you discussing the price of these cars, many are leased as there is a huge amount of tax relief on them at the moment. All about the monthlies.

My point is that not everyone has a £100k car budget or if PCP’ing a £1000 per month to spend.

With say a £55k ish budget for 2 cars, I’m always going to spend £50k on a car I actually enjoy driving and £5k on a car that I use to commute and do the weekly shopping in. And not the other way around.

Even if I had a £100k budget I’m not sure I would spend a significant portion of it on a car that is used to drive to work and do the shopping in.

I do however get that someone doing big mileage in their daily car would want something nicer, as they are of course spending a lot of time in it.

I had one for test drive and took my OH daughter as she has loved Tesla for couple years and after an hours test drive and I was specing my choices up she reminded me 2 years ago I said I’d never be in one lol
Saw yours the other day Pete and looked spanking and definitely helps appeal etc
Keep doing it for you
Like everyone else eagerly awaiting wheel updates

I don't see how any of that opinion about personal affordability or budgeting is relevant to the feedback of owning and living with this specific EV?

Budget is relevant.

I think it sits perfectly in Petes fleet. He is lucky enough to have an epic daily, and choice of epic weekend B road blasters.

If someone only has budget for 1 of those 3 vehicles, bought to tick all of their own personal boxes, it might change the final choice of car a tad.

But, if you can have all 3, its win win win!

How is it not?

If your budget only allows for an EV or a ICE car, I think it’s perfectly relevant to debate which one you would buy.
