That is lovely inside and out, I particularly like the back of it, just a pity the wheels aren't a bit more dished to really set it off.

But I'd struggle to pay £50k for it. The 996 4S is heavy and not that powerful, so compared to other things you're considering and what you want to do with it, I'd be worried you might quickly get bored of it. Don't get me wrong, it would be a lovely handling car down a nice sweeping road, bit of an old school analogue feel to it, but performance wise it's never going to knock your socks off!

I think the speed of a 4S would surprise you. The 996 isn’t a big car, even with that fat ass in the 4S. Bhp figures aren’t everything

This, I'd struggle to call any 996 c4s I've driven slow to be honest. A nice tight handling car wins over power for actual fun any day in my book!

Slowly coming round to 996s but still compared to 993s and earlier they're a bit ugly duckling!

Straight line speed is fine on a drag strip or down the pub.

But the real fun is in the corners.

Agree though that a C4 wouldn't be my choice for the most fun. It's a great "cheap" every day all year usable Porsche though.

Horses for courses and all that.

I had a 996 c4s, 3.8s engine with 4 wheel drive, I found nothing wrong with the speed and when on a good back road the 4 wheel drive really did work well, it’s was a faster car than I could drive fully committed tbh! Slow it was not.

They are a 3.6 Engine - 320bhp. As you say, they are still a quick car, sub 5 seconds to 60 and will hit 175mph!

4s is a 3.8 bud ;)

It's not. The Gen1 996 Carrera's were all 3.4 / 300bhp. The Gen2 Carrera's were all 3.6. Even the turbo was 3.6 TT.

The 997 then got the 3.6 in the Carrera and the 3.8 in the Carrera S Models both Gen1 and Gen2. (the Gen1 turbo was 3.6 and the gen2 Turbo was 3.8TT)

Link to a Grey C4S - Listed as 3.6 PORSCHE 911 (996) CARRERA 4S 2004

I stand corrected, I swore it was a 3.8 all these years, think it was someone telling me the 3.8 engines were more prone to the ims and bore score ‘like in my car’ that’s one for the, you learn something new every day! Lol

I've driven a 996 4S, all be it not in absolute anger, but acceleration wise it done nothing more for me over my own 986 S, and compared to my car obviously felt heavier.

All depends what you're comparing it to. Specifically for Gav who I was replying to, it would feel heavy and cumbersome compared to his GP1, and in a straight line would probably be slower and less noise than his C63. But yes, 320bhp is definitely enough to shuffle down any road.

I had the 986 S too, but the car I miss the most performance wise is my 3.6C2. And that’s over the two 400bhp cars I have atm lol.

I’ve been looking at 993’s again, have to say, I think they are a lovely looking thing, esp in 4s form, tbh with a lot less tech in them this could be a possible option as it’s not going to be a daily, just a weekend car!

Some beautiful ones on pistonheads at the moment!

I would love a resprayed and restored 993 as a daily - with of course a full engine rebuild.

Some C4S are fetching £80k, which is a bit nuts considering they were £30k in 2013.

I agree though. Stunning!!

Lol, behave, only a face a mother could love! Lol, it’s in keeping with the year, I don’t mind the front end tbh but that rear and side profile! Don’t get much better

So it’s probably been covered somewhere, but I was chatting to a local service specialist today that maintains my dads classic 3.2
Conversation was mostly 996 related and it really wasn’t a pretty picture, any owners been bitten by one or is it all a bit over rated ?
